I know i am going to get roast for this but.....i have a 93 bandit 400 and the carbs frustration and finding parts have become overwhelming! So I decided to take a path not walked often and go efi on my bandit.
I will be using the throttle bodies off the 03 gsxr 600 , inline fuel pump and micro squirt ecu. what do you guys think about this? I seen a post on the Kawasaki website where this guy efi a Gpz 900 with success and went on to turbo charge the bike.
-
the throttle bodies are the easy bit.
having all the sensor inputs that the ecu requires and an ecu that can fire injectors at the revs that a bike pulls will be the hard part.
is it a fuel only ecu?
which is prob what you will want since the bike will be cdi ignition and controls itself.
it will take a lot of dyno time to tune as a bike engine is far more fussy about fuel mixtures than a car, and at 14000 rpm it will only take a second or so to turn a good motor into a big paper weight if its even just a wee bit lean.

I've thought of this project but figure it would be much easier and cheaper just to buy a FI bike. One thing to check first on the B400 is if the stator and charging circuit can handle the requirements of the fuel pump that will be needed to give pressure to the injectors.
-
I will look into this. :yikes:
-
I've always thought microsquirt would be great on our little bikes. Best of luck with the project, putting the ECU under the seat is a perfect spot for it.
-
The microsquirt says it can control the coils. Could the original igniter be done away with in this scenario?
-
Yes, megasquirt version 3.0
-
Take a look at the guys work with microsquirt on the cbr400 at 400greybike, think his user name is PARIUS. he's got some videos on youtube and is pretty much up and running now.
-
I have the gsxr throttle bodies in hand and because of the frame design of the B4 the TB's are too wide to fit between the frame in the same orientation as the carbs.
It can fit if you make extended tube runners and push the tb's back in the ait box area. so that is the other problem.
Everyday I am more and more tempted to just pick up a B6 parts are so hard to find for the B4 and the carb issue, :banghead: CDI issue and hard starting issue is driving me nuts!!
I got my tank welded (rusty area cut out and replace with fresh metal for 120 US here in Hialeah the guy did a fantastic job!!
He also welded a hairline crack in my engine cover for 20 bucks. All I have to do now is prep and paint the tank and I am go to go on that part.
-
Someone else fit gsxr carbs. The same setup might work with the throttle bodies.

But it's probably much easier to solve your carb problem or buy another bike then go the efi route.

So i changed out all the capacitors on the cdi as per write up, i have spark now but weak, like a really tine orange spark.... any advice on this?
-
4 weeks later with a new cdi box this bike wont start!! :banghead: :duh:
-
bought a b6 with nasty carbs clean em and its up and running and the b4 still giving attitude
-
Bad coils can cause weak spark. Have you tested them?
Also, I've been musing about EFI on a bandit for the last few days. It's something try if you have too much time and money on your hands and need a project. I think it'd be pretty neat, honestly. :)
-
coil read nominal range according to factory manual
-
Wait, I just read back through. You had to replace the capacitors in the digital igniter box as well, and now you have weak spark?
Check the voltage regulator. This can lead to blown capacitors and could also cause the weak spark issue.
-
I willl change that out as well so far here is what has been done
new carbs
new cdi box
new plugs
new plug wires
new petcock
new tank
new carb boots
2 starter solenoids
new battery 9bs gel type
