Title: Carb help (rubber plugs)

Cleaning carbs on B4, been sitting 8yrs. They are spic and span, new float needles, o rings etc... One question though, the rubber plugs have shrunk or hardened and will not "snap" into place to cover the pilot jets. They will stay in enough to mount the float bowl assembly and the feed tube on the assembly does keep them from falling out. But, they are probably not sealing the hole. I dont understand why they are in there in the first place, I have searched the board to no avail but I did see a post where someone is running without them competely? So whats the story on the plugs, why are they there and am I going to have an issue if they are a bit loose?

The plugs are there to stop serge when braking from the fuel rushing around in the float bowls.
You will find after the plugs have been in fuel they soften off again.

Yes, they did soften and swell as you said, they seem fine now and engine is running smoothly!
