Title: carb rebuild tips
Post by: kako on April 09, 2008, 10:43:30 PM
got my carb kit, and taking the carbs out of the bike was the easy part.... but once i opened one up i realized i dont have a clue of what i am doing.... where i am at now is taking the float out.. does it pop right out? because that what it feels like it should do.. i just dont want to force it. also how much should i break the carbs down? and any other tips would be greatly appreciated

The floats should pull right out with a little resitance.  I'm not exactly sure how torn down the carbs need to be, all I've ever done when cleaning them is remove the bowls, remove the tops, and spray cleaner through all the passages/jets, clean the bowls and reassemble.

did you take the jets out? and did you use a plastic safe cleaner or can any old carb cleaner be used?

I haven't ever pulled any jets, but my carbs weren't in all that bad of shape either.  I just used a can of Napa brand Carb Cleaner.

The air/fuel screw (accessable from the outside with the carbs fully assembled) or the pilot jet, maybe?

I used a grinder to make a regular flathead skinnier for adjusting the air/fuel screw and removing the pilots. Be careful if you're trying to remove the pilot jets. They're usually stuck in there pretty good and easy to strip. Then you're #$%!%ed.

the one beside the main jet, which you hve to take the float bowl off to get to. do i need to get it out? or should it be fine not cleaning it? i dont have a grinder either... i dont have access to all my tools because i am going to school in a different city. and live pretty far away from the closest crappy tire.

yes that is the most important jet the slow jet and the most important to spray carb cleaner down and to blow air through

ok. looks like  a bike ride to canadian tire then. one more question. for the idle jets(the  ones that are on the bottom and are easy to get to. and you dont have to take the bowl off to get to) i am missing a washer and one of the o-ring/washer is in like a million pieces. is it alright to to double up two orings that fit, as a little part time fix till i get the proper washer and o-ring thingy? and when i go to the bike shop to get those parts what do i ask for?

kk went and got a new set of screw drivers because they were on sale. now my last question is where does the smallest o ring go?

bottom of the carb towards the front i thought but i have seen so many carbs they all blend together. use a small peice of wire i use safty wire and you can unscrew the fuel screw then then the spring should fall out then a washer and then a small oring
