Sorry for such a stupid question but can i take out the chain tentioner with out doing anything else(draining oil, taking the tank off and so on.You get me!!!)

usually i have to take off my tank and carbs

You can take it out without taking anything else apart. You can easily reach it from the right side of the bike. You might want to put a towel on the engine though so you can't loose any bolts.

Thanks guys. its just have some noise coming from the top of the engine and just wanted to check if the tentioner is working ok.
Not too familiar with it, so whats to check when i have it out?

I just did this about a week ago, for the same reason.
I took it out without removing anything else, but be aware that assembly is NOT the reverse of removal! The mechanism is basically a spring loaded plunger with a one-way mechanism. The plunger spring keeps a tension against your cam chain guide in the engine, and will extend as you remove it from the engine. HOWEVER, you cannot make the plunger retract by just pushing on it. You have to remove the rubber access plug and turn the screw inside to retract the plunger. This means that when you put it back together you need to hold the internal screw to keep the plunger retracted while you install the tensioner and the mounting bolts. I managed to get it back together, but it was no fun with the carbs in place. If I ever do it again, I will remove the carbs, and it should be pretty quick and easy.

If you turn it back it will lock, then you can install it and when you're done you can unlock it by giving it a little twist with a screwdriver. You can also lock it by putting in a small plate, there is a groove for that :wink:

Thanks for the tip, Herr Tod, I will certainly remember it the next time I take the tensioner out!
Land Warrior, no the tensioner was fine and wasn't causing the noise. I suspect, as you say, that it may be valve clearance. Whenever I find the time I will check it out. Let us know how yours turns out.

Ok.A bit of a problem with time too.Just after opening my own restaurant and as it turns out im short staff. Have to work all the hours at the moment. Wish could get a couple days to my self and my lovely bandit  :sad: Oh, ye, getting married in 2 weeks too, that doesnt help with time eather.  :beers:
Will post when get anything done. But i think i'll check the tentioner when i'll be doing the valves.Just wonna do everything in one shot. Just to be sure...

Don't take out the tensioner and turn the crankshaft. You could turn it to the right and nothing will happen (probably!) but if you turn it to the left the chain will come loose from the sprockets.

Will keep an eye on that too. Cheers. There is no way to just know everything so i just gonna go for it...Handy with cars so the bike should be easy enough.
