High-mount twin exhaust on a 400?
« on: August 08, 2006, 01:22:14 AM »
Hi all,

Well, I finally pulled my finger out and bought the 400v that was for sale near me.

I'm already thinking of a few mods (can't leave stuff well enough alone).

A wrecker near me is selling a pair of zxr400/600 cans cheap. I've asked and I know the cans are the right diameter - 51mm.

I've done a search, and I can't find anything anyone has posted about putting dual cans on a 400.

Has anyone attempted this or something similar? Ideally I'd want to mount them both high, just under the tail (I'm removing the pillion pegs and going for the single-seat cowl option).

I'm not too concerned about the connector pipes - I can either bend those myself or get it done locally. I'm more concerned about getting the connection to the collector correct?

Anyone got any ideas or advice?

:congrats:  on the bike!

I think you'd be breaking new ground with the dual high pipes.  Someone did an undertail a few years ago but I don't know of any duals.  That's a great look but, I wonder what it would do for performance?

Well, bikers can and do argue about the physics and benefits of aftermarket slip-ons and full systems until the cows come home.

Seeing as no-one does a full, pre-tuned system for the 400, we're working on trial and error with an R&D budget of zero.

However, if i'm only mucking around with the system from the collector backwards, surely I can't screw things up too badly......can I?

Am I right in thinking this only applies to the '88 - '89 gsxr400's? The subsequent 400's were also gk73 designated, but they switched back to a single pipe in '90, is my understanding.

Also, found this old thread of yours with some pics, if anyone is thinking of doing the same thing.

They are wrapped in the protective packaging on the picture. here's how the look on the ZX, I want to mount them the same way under the Bandit. I just hope they are not too big, it's difficult to tell from a picture. I've seen them in real life a few times but not with my bike next to it.
