Title: high speed wiggle
Post by: rolandoc on March 26, 2007, 12:58:43 AM
ok here it goes, got on the freeway about a week ago and it felt like the bike was going to wiggle out from under me at around 65-70 mph. so i decided to put new tires on because they were pretty worn. hop on the freeway today and i brought it up to about 80-90 before it started to wiggle but it still didn't feel right. i am funning the suggested front:29psi and rear 36 psi tire pressure. anything else i should try to check? kinda at a loss here.

can you tell if the wiggle is from the front or the back?  Axle bolts tight?  Wheel bearings good? I'm assuming that the tires are properly balanced...

edit: also swingarm bolt tight?  Swingarm bearings and steering head bearings will cause a wiggle... knowing which end it's coming from will help. :)

what stormi said!

when i just got my drivers license my B4 would sometimes wiggle on the freeway. didnt happen often so i didnt bother looking for the problem.
some time later my rear bearings needed replacement, so i removed the rear wheel and saw the previous owner forgot to put the axle for the 3rd bearing in it.
so it actually only used 2 bearings instead of 3  :duh:

after i made new one and put new bearings in it never wiggled again.

i believe the wiggle is from the rear, thats what it feels like. i know the axle bolt is tight but how tight exactly do i need it? the tire feels like it is properly balanced. other then that thats pretty much all i know. the rear wheel bearings felt ok when i had the wheel off.

The service manual should give you the torque for that.
You know you can download one in the "Members Only" section, right?

Get the owner's manual too if you don't have it in hard copy while you're there.
