On my bike there is an inline fuel filter, and I just rang up fowlers to buy a replacement and they've told me that they arn't as standard on these bikes. It's an imported 1991 Bandit 400, the double disc version. Can anyone else clarify? He said there should be a filter in the fuel tap?

my b4 doesnt have an in line fuel filter but after the hassel i have had so far in trying to get the f******g thing to run i would seriously recomend getting one. the stuff comming out of the tank when i drained it was kinda orangy and full of particals of rust and crud.....
-
I've got one on there at the moment but want to replace it, where's a good place to look for an after market one?
-
The fuel filter in the tank only really filters big hunks of rust. Small particiles still get through. Your local bike shop should be able to get you an aftermarket inline fuel filter for about $5.
Something like this:

Yup - what Mike said! Those work fine... so long as you don't accidentally put it in backwards after using it for years and have all of the crud it's caught over that time wash back into your carbs. I've never done anything like that but I'm just sayin'...
:duh:

do I need to worry about size or anything or are they pretty much all standard?
-
I think the ID of the fuel line tubing is 5/16 inch.
-
Thanks guys, I'm having real problems finding somewhere that will sell em :( stupid england. Don't suppose anyone from the UK knows a supplier than I can get some from? also 5/16th of an inch is 8mm right?

try www.mandp.com or perhaps http://www.busters-accessories.co.uk/

Just need to go measure the line to be sure then I can order one, am I measuring the lumen or the diameter from outside to outside?
-
Don't buy a cheap one, as I found out, thanks again Jay. Spend the few extra bucks and get one you can clean.
This is a good one---------> http://denniskirk.com/jsp/product_catalog/Product.jsp?skuId=H18118

You can clean the cheapos, just reverse the flow direction. Preferably with the filter off the bike, right Rob? :stickpoke:

The other thing to be wary of is to make sure one of these jewels will flow enough fuel to feed the carbs at high rpm. Don't know if it's a problem for the B4, but I've heard of B12's starving for fuel because an in-line filter wouldn't flow enough gas to keep the foat bowls full at full song.
