Title: Just got a pair of race stands for a good deal. How to use?
Post by: GooseMan on July 27, 2007, 04:14:36 PM
Canadian Tire is having a sale on a pair of race stands (front and rear) for only $60. I just bought a set, but it was their last one, and didnt include the rear spools for the swingarm. Oh well, I guess I can just get these anywhere, right?

Well, my question is where the hell do you mount the spools to? Do I drill a hole in the swingarm or something? I've been looking at pics online, and the spool seems to be mounted right below the swingarm...I dont get it.

As for the front, it doesnt seem to make much sense either. Its just flat, with a small bolt sticking out of it....how the hell does that work?

heres a pic

Heres the front, modified by a local forum member. You can see the hole where the bolt used to be....

I can't view the pics (blocked here at work).

The B4 does not have taps for spools.  Paddle stands are easier (the paddles lift the s/a from underneath).  I have seen someone drill a hole in the s/a and mount spools that way.  I guess you would just put a nut inside the hollow part of the s/a and bolt the threaded spool that way.  I actually think that's how they are mounted on my CBR.

The front?  Without being able to see the pic, I'm not sure what you have.  There are two general kinds - one has little feet on it that go under the bottoms of the forks and lift that way, the other is a jointed contraption that has a pin that goes up in the steerer tube.  The latter is nice b/c you can take off the forks.

I can see the pix, but I don't understand how the front stand is supposed to work w/o additional pieces to fit in the holes on the top plates of those tubes.

I guess its stupid of me to even reply not seeing the pics but I'm bored as hell.

Some manuf's like Pit Bull (I think) sell the front stands in two pieces.  You buy the base and then either the feet that lift from the fork-bottoms or the big loop thing that straddles the top of the wheel and then has the pin that goes up into the steerer tube.  Is it possible that you just have the top part of the steerer tube type?

Just got home! Good news is the Bandit DOES have holes on the bottom of the forks!

Bad news is the front stand is slightly too wide....but otherwise, it looks like it would fit :(

Also, the rear stand is WAAAAAY too wide...maybe about 2-3" per side on the swingarm! Yeesh! No way I want 3" swingarm spools sticking out on either side!

So I think I'm going to cut off the spool holder part and get some L brackets that will hold the bike underneath the swingarm. Makes the most sense, and I can probably use it on future bikes. Not sure about the front stand tho.

most of the time they are easy to bend inward if they are too wide

+1... I had to do that for my B4... then had to pull them back apart when I got the CBR...
