Title: K&N Filters

I wanted to know how often you guys with K&N filters clean them, and do you add oil to them? I recently cleaned mine out and added oil and the engine would not start. It turned out that the engine was suficating for air. So I cleaned it out again this time no oil and it started right up. I have never had a K&N filter before but I assume that it will need the oil to keep it from deteriorating.

As I understand it, you need the oil to keep it performing - the oil helps pick up/trap dirt.  I cleaned/oiled mine before last spring's riding season with no issues.  I'll probably do it again when I pull the tank the next time.

Go with a LIGHT oil film. A case where a little is good, a lot is bad.

Yes Paul is right.
You can't use heavy and sticky oil, it won't breath. Use the supplied K&N oil or two stroke premix.

The first time that I re oiled mine (not on the bandit), I did the same thing and put on too much oil. It needs very little to work properly. You can reduce the amount of oil by tightly wrapping paper towel around the air filter and letting it sit overnight. Repeat as necessary. The best way that I know of is to apply a very light spray, and let it sit for a while to spread over the filter. Look for any areas that might not have oil (white versus very light pink) and apply some only to those spots.
