Title: My 400 Cafe Build
Post by: TJS on July 22, 2011, 10:47:06 PM
I will add some details later. Basically, I'm using the '95 gsxr 750 for parts.

My brother had the header. It's from Bandit Mania in th UK and the can is off the gsxr.
I drilled and tapped a hole to bolt on the rear sets and reversed the shift....so its 1 up and 5 down.
I installed a Barnett carbon clutch and springs, Factory pro Stage III jet kit with K&N pods, and still to come is a Factory Pro shift kit. The shift kit has to be installed by removing the oil sump.

Last night's progress. Then the wife drove me "Cupcake" style on the Vespa to get a drink.

Fox shock from the '95 gsxr.

I hope some of this inspires you to make some modifications here in the States. The Bikes in the gallery from across the pond are really nice! They do have more years of the bike for parts, dual disks, and seem all those guys know how to weld and use a lathe. Makes me jealous!

A few more small things done tonight. I will try to have the front sprocket and and rear sprocket carrier milled tomorrow.

Very nice. Was the swing arm a simple swap?
Title: Re: My 400 Cafe Build
Post by: TJS on July 29, 2011, 12:44:45 PM
The swap was very easy; if you are familiar with turning a wrench.
* Use the Bandit swingarm bolt
* Cut off support bracket on the frame that is behind the shift side rear set.
* Heat and bend support bracket on the frame behind the rear brake side rear set.
* Some grinding on the "U" shaped bracket, where the "dog bone" link and the bottom of the rear shock attaches. The Gsxr shock needs about 2mm ground on the "U" to attatch the shock and use the longest of the dog bone links. This gave me a lower ride height. I used the shorter ones to race and give a higher ride height and quicker turning.

This swing arm will shorten your wheel base by 1.5" to 2". See my photos and details in the Bandit gallery. I have done a similiar build before to race in WERA.

Here is the other bike I did.

RF 900 Swingarm
94 gsxr rear wheel and spacers
89 gsxr 750 front end
94 gsxr rear sets
95 gsxr radiator
Penske rear shock
94-95 gsxr sharkskins
GMD frame
1mm pistons
Adjusted cam sprockets
1mm off head

Thanks for the info. After I finish my front end swap the swing arm is the last thing on my list of to dos.

Since you are in Canada: you can probably find a GSXR 400 or Aprilia RS 250. I heard they were also easy swaps. I've seen the gsxr 400 swap and it seemed easy.

You should meet up with the guy that bought my bike, he's moving to Richmond, VA soon and has plans for my old bike.

JmuRiz,

Make sure he knows about this site or go through you to send his info. Did he seem like an ok guy?.....or the kind of guy that you can't trust your wife, daughter, and etc around.......oops I just described 50% of all men and a 100% of what we all think.
Title: Re: My 400 Cafe Build
Post by: JmuRiz on August 02, 2011, 05:02:28 PM
Oh yeah, he seemed perfectly normal, used to be a tech at a Honda shop and had other plans for the bike than what the parts I had for sale with mine had.

I'll make sure he knows about the site and have him look you up.  It would be very cool to have two hot-rodded B4s around Richmond.

If you want the headlight lower, you can use t-bolt clamps like in this thread.

looking good TJS

am in the middle of front & rear end project myself, looking at the photo of your rear wheel..i take the wheel more then 4.5  !  due to you rework/milling of the sprocket and that the tire looks wider

what is the wheel size 5.5 !!! & tire width !

Post by: TJS on August 10, 2011, 07:36:05 AM
Yes, the wheel is 5.5" with a 180. I did the same years ago on the bandit with the silver body for racing.

I got up early to put on mirrors before wife and baby had me.
Title: Re: My 400 Cafe Build
Post by: Unique on August 10, 2011, 09:38:53 AM
Thanks TJS  i thought it was 5.5  with 180 ... 750 and not 400 wheel.

whats the ride like with a 180

Have you had any trouble with the offset sprocket in the pass on your racer.. ie wear.. broke out ! etc!!

Dek
i too do have 5.5 with 180

I didn't have trouble with the past bike and the machined sprocket. That silver race bike put out close to 70ho on a local dyno. The previous guy that made the sprocket is no longer in the area. So, I'm trying a new guy close to town. I think he will do a proper job. His shop is clean where it should be clean and "used" looking where it should be. He is also use to doing step out sprockets for drag bikes.
The silver bike with the 180 and RF swingarm was a little twitchy in the straights, but would turn like a TZ 250 GP bike. I put a stabilzer on it to help straight and turn transitions.

Coming along nicely, what are the footplates off?
Ive looked at the Suzi Gladus and it's wheels would look real nice on the B4.

"Irene" weather has me locked in the house today; so I did a few things:

* mounted gsxr passenger pegs, I will weld a bracket later. For now this mock up bracket has been tested to hold my wife.
* installed HD tail light
* fixed light for license plate, seat lock cable now runs throuch license plate hole, all mounted under rear fender and visible ......as state law requires.

Hi TJS

a good paint job is the way to go to finish off a great bike project like yours, regards to chrome frame.. depending on what you mean by that!!  a paint job that looks like chrome or do you mean chrome plated...

See Red01 remarks... in reply#1 and the link in reply#2

Never heard of that. You have any options? Is there a chrome paint or powder coating?
Title: Re: My 400 Cafe Build
Post by: Unique on September 18, 2011, 05:00:11 PM
Hi TJS

no i hadn't when i was deciding what to do with my frame..someone in my area had done it. it look grant.. but luckily i didn’t... i didn't want to do the same as he had. it wasn't till bandit alley.. Red01 post, and then google it.

Regards to powder coating its quite surprise what colour they can do, there a powder coating company down the road from me
I thinking of getting my wheels powder coating...depending on £££££ and if they can match the orange that i used, it would save me some time.

http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=powder+coating&hl=en&rlz=1T4GGHP_en-GBGB428GB429&prmd=imvns&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=tDp2TuPfIM62hAe7r8S1DA&ved=0CNQBELAE&biw=1280&bih=539

http://www.endurancecoatingsllc.com/Project_Gallery.php

conventional liquid paint come in many colour, its possible thats there is chrome looking paint, but remember what ever colour you pick!.. ie, black ! That not all blacks are not the same.

when i pick the colour that i used @ friend paint supply shop that he owns , let me brows through lots of colour books. i found the bike colour were costly.. in the end i went with car colours, i matched a black & orange that i think go well together and as a plus i used good single pack top clear coat... which i think gives a better deep.

with clear coat don't cut on cost otherwise in the long run you'll pay for it!

Hi I noticed that you did the whole four airfilter pod thing and the stage three kit. Would you recommend this? Does it make that much difference over a stage one? Does it hurt file economy? Just curious.
Title: Re: My 400 Cafe Build
Post by: TJS on October 24, 2011, 10:22:30 AM
The silver race bike, I ran a modified air box and one jet bigger on a Stage I Dyno jet kit. The stage III, Factory Pro was to match up with the K&N pods. I'm happy with the results so far and will hope to put on a dyno soon.

I also noticed what looks like metal foot pegs on your bike. What did they come off of?? I haven't been able to find metal pegs for a gsf400 anywhere.

There are hundreds of metal foot pegs on ebay that will fit.  I picked up 3 sets of these and got them to fit in both the driver and passenger so have one spare set...

If you order pod filters make sure to order oblong shaped ones because the carbs are too close   together to use rounds. Learned from experience. Expensive mistake.

A long time ago a friend of mine who raced flat track and built his own race bikes with lectron carbs told me its a bad idea using K&N style air filters with CV carbs, because they need an air box to function right. Just thought id mention this since your using K&N style filters on your CV carbs, you may be loosing power by not using the air box.

CV carbs are crap anyway, they are a pain to tune. so if you plan on tuning it, it may be worth your time investigating on the use of round or flat slide conventional carbs, maybe carbs off a dirtbike with a special set up for your bike and a 4 into 1 cable ? Thats what i did for my XS650, used 2 carbs from Polaris 250 atv and changed the jets, needles, slide and adjusted the float heights.

See notes above....pods work great! Pipe + Stage III Factory Pro jet kit. When in doubt use a dyno and a Suzuki mechanic.

Why loose drivability when you can use regular carbs ?

Maybe if anyone could get ahold of some Lectron carb's and use them ? They are the next best thing to fuel injection.

Ok I did the whole factory pro config30 kit and got the right k&n filter pods (the same ones you have ru1824). My question is how do you get them on? It's very tight and I am haveing trouble getting them to stretch over the intake. Any advice??

Lanky,

I srayed the inside rim of the filter with silicone and made sure they were left in a warm room overnight. They are tight! I also sprayed the carb rim. Make sure they are on straight and very tight or they will pop off like I had happen.

I can't find a dealer that ship to Greece from the USA. Who are your local dealers? They should be able to find it or check your version of ebay.

Can you send or post a pic of your stabilzer mounted on the frame?

I noticed some chain rubbing on the frame. So, off with the swingarm and grinded about 1/4" off the "triangle" lip on the inside of the frame. I then painted the area black to prevent rust and for checking any future chain rub.
