Author Topic: Is this a stock '91 Bandit 400 Needle? (Read 2965 times)

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone knew if this is a stock needle for the carbs. I read another thread posted by someone with a 93 bandit 400 and he asked about his needle which looked different. Someone said that it was stock. However, his needle looks completely different from mine. I'm just trying to determine if my carbs have a jet kit or not.
Also, does anyone know if I can change the main jets w/o doing a carb synch or taking the carbs off the bike?

Not stock... I've actually never seen a 'stock' adjustable needle. Well, at least other than dedicated roadrace bikes...

Nope, it's not.
I may have posted the other pictures you refered to. The stock needles don't have the adjustable clip on top, like yours. Often the main jets from FactoryPro (who may have manufactured that needle in your hand) have their name written on the side. That would be a definitive way of identifying your jet kit, and also tell you a what size the jet is thus giving you clues why your bike runs the way it does.

The stock Canadian model bike came with adjustable needles. It just depends on how dedicated your government is to reducing emissions.

That needle looks like its from a Jet Kit. If the white spacer has been drilled it's from a factorypro jet.

Neither jet kits needles I've used had any identifying marks on them. But mikuni needles have the part number stamped on the sides. Here are the measurements for both needles if you want to figure out what kit was in it.

30 mm - 2.33 mm
40 mm - 2.02 mm
50 mm - 1.75 mm

Best guess would be that the first mm measurement is distance from the clip-end of the needle, with the second being the thickness of the needle at that point. Gives you a rough idea of the taper design.

But me, I'm going to run off to Sudco and see if I can't find a match in their catalog.... I'll post back if I find something. :D

Brian is correct, measurements are from the top of the needle in 10 mm increments to give you can idea of the needle taper.

Through sudco the one of the closer needles I found was 5FL14 but you'd have to run them at the richest clip. Most of the mikuni needles are longer then 56 mm. But if they work you'd save a fortune from buying a jet kit.
