Title: New Exhaust fun.
Post by: echomadman on March 29, 2005, 08:37:56 AM: Began fitting the new exhaust on saturday afternoon, ran the engine for a bit, then liberally sprayed the bolts holding the headers on with wd40 to try to break any siezing.
Started on the left, both bolts came out, this got me worried, nothing on this bike has been easy to fix.
middle two pipes have bolts that are rusted to bits, allen key rounds out the socket on one, the other bolt had a regular hex head, which promptly snapped off.
At this point i gave up, put the dustcover on the bike and went to the pub to assess the situation. The bike is still out in the back yard partly dissessembled

Anyone got any tips for getting the siezed bolts out?

Post by: PitterB4 on March 29, 2005, 09:11:54 AM: More heat. Nearly every bolt on my bike was siezed (except strangely the header bolts :?: ). A propane torch was enough to melt the loctite and I think because the different metals expand differently when heated, I was able to break the chemical siezing that had occured over 10 plus years. I had one bolt on my rear rotor that just wouldn't budge. I was able to grab the head of it with a pipe wrench and move it. The one with the snapped off head is going to be a real bitch. Good luck!

Post by: echomadman on April 03, 2005, 08:35:19 AM: Well, I got it on, the pipe off cylinder1 still only has one bolt holding it in till i can get somone to eat out the snapped off one with a welder.

One crucial thing was missing from the new pipes though

No stop for the centrestand, so at the moment my centrestand is locked in place by trusty cable ties and wire to stop it clattering off the chain.

Post by: echomadman on April 03, 2005, 09:45:50 AM: It sounds fantastic by the way, it's loud but in a deeper tone then the insane rasp my bike had before, i had a few other problems after fitting it, but there's another thread on the way about those

Very clean and shiny isn't it......hard to believe in fact those pipes were in a similar condition to the ones you removed eh?

The can was always immac..but the pipes were very brown....fockers in the breakers still charged me what you know they charged me!

Anyway...amazing what 2 days with some wd40, scotch-brite, metal polish and polishing soaps can do eh?
If you keep them rinsed down regularly and polish them once a week they should stay nice and mirror-y.

Post by: Red01 on April 03, 2005, 08:14:40 PM: Cut the Centerstand stop off the old pipe. When you visit the welder, have him weld it on your new one.
