my B4 has a noisy valve train up until about 5000k rpm, then seems to quiet down...is this normal or do i need to adjust the valves, has 16k mi on the bike

In my experience, this is normal, though I think the valve train is just as noisy... but the rest of the engine gets louder

, at least my exhaust sure does....

If its adjusted properly, the valve train should be a little noisy, kinda like a sewing machine sound or mice w/ typewriters. If the valve train is quiet, the the valves have gotten tight and need adjusting.

If you haven't adjusted the valves, or don't know when they were last done, its probably worth checking... then you know their state. IIRC, they should be done every 5000 miles or so anyway.

If it is really noisy then your cam chain tensioner is broken. If it is broken it is probably the spring, you can take it out by removing the cap, then you can cut off a little piece of the spring, bend it to make it fit in the holder, put it back and you're ready to go.

hmmm ill check the shop manuel to find where/what the cam tensioner is and take a look at it, i thought it might have been that my oil level was low, it was a 1/4 qt low when i sat the bike upright...don't know if its supposed to be checked upright or on the sidestand..

It should be checked upright. On the side stand, it's hardly visible if at all.
