Race weekend in North Bay
« on: September 10, 2007, 03:26:30 PM »
Well I was up in North Bay, Ontario racing in the VRRA series this past weekend. The track is not a permanent one, it is put together every year for this event in September at the airport.
This was my 1st time racing here and the track is very rough and bumpy with many surface changes, lots of cracks with tar sealer on them and does not heat up in the slightest in September. But it's the same for every one and it's a challenge to race there.
In the qualifying heat race on Saturday I got a good start with the little B4. I was using a 13/49 gearing and it just jumped off the line and after the 1st corner I was actually leading the race(1st time ever). By the end of the lap I was in second and then the better racers took over. By the 3rd lap I was a solid 5th and would not have been caught at the pace I was going. At the end of the 3rd lap I low sided and that was the end of my race. Only broke the clutch lever, got a good grind on the clip-on and a scratch on the frame.
I was then 24th on the grid for the final on Sunday because of my DNF. Dead last. Oh well. So I just went out to do what I could at that point. I got a good start but didn't really push too hard. I was about 3 seconds a lap slower than my times from the day before and finished 11th. The B4 is running like a real trooper. She is quick and agile and if it ever gets a decent racer on it, the B4 could get on the podium.

Getting grided up.

On the track.

This is me starting to go down. I was just going too fast, leaned over too far for the surface and the line I was taking. Live and learn.

Down

Looks like a blast. I'm glad neither you or your B4 got hurt.

Looks and sounds like fun, G.  I may need to try my hand at racing one of these days.

BTW, Jay is right.  I've saved a couple lowsides by pushing her back up with the knee.  I almost screwed up this weekend.  I got lazy and tried to maintain my normal pace without moving my body enough.  I actually scrapped a peg, exhaust and boot (toe and shin sliders)... with rearsets on the CBR.  That woke me up!

I know what you mean about the saving with the knee and all. If it was a normal track surface I think I would have had a bit of a longer slide because there would have been traction. This surface was just very unforgiving. You had traction or you didn't. At that second, I didn't. :thud:

But I had a lot of fun. I think that is the end of my season and I can start preparing for the 2008 madness. :stir:

Bandit,
I know who you are. I'm Gary the photographer. You always call me by my name so you know who I am . . . . eh.
Good videos . . . . .eh.  What camera are you using?

Here are a couple from my buddy Tim from the camera on his bike.

1st lap . . . . eh.

Me crashing at the end of the 3rd lap. . . . eh. I'm 2 back and hard to see so you have to watch for the guy skidding across the track at about the 1:08 mark . . . . eh.
