Something rather Wrong!!
« on: December 11, 2005, 06:44:49 PM »
My bike seems to be completly buggered, not to sure if its the winter weather  (dampness)
or if there is actually a problem.

Going along doing about 60 it decides to backfire everynow and again sometimes

Slowing down it has a tendancy to switch off

and now it wont start, thought it mite be fuel but have checked and there is plenty there and no kinks in the fuel lines,

Have had to leave it at a friends house in his garage as i was there at the time.

Just had it serviced but im not to sure if the mechanic did a very good job at all, he seems to have slacked quit alot for the money i payed.
im not to sure about it all as ive only been riding it a week and still getting used to the bike, ( im still in aww at the speed compared to my old 125 so i may have a clouded judgment on how it runs   )

This is the bike

When you say it's backfiring at speed is it:
1. Backfiring when you close the throttle...this usually indicates a lean fuel condition, which would also be consistant with the engine quitting.
2. Backfiring at steady throttle...this would likely be timing related.

If you just had it serviced, I would take it back and explain to the mechanic what problem you are having. He  may have to check his ignition settings again.

Make sure you idle is set correctly...IE, you need the bike to idle properly first. I'm unsure spec on the 400, but it should be in the range of 1000 to 1200 rpm.

It backfires sometimes when i throttle off, and as a result i slow down and then it cuts out,
and then takes about 5 minutes of waiting on the curb to restart again.

I have no money at this moment so im going to see if he will do the lot for free
as he was supposed to have done a full service on it, and all it says on the reciept is:

Spark plugs
Oil filter
Oil 10w 40

Wouldnt it say more on a full service?? or is that me being stupid?

so what happened to an air filter? The rest will be down as labour but he should give you a break down of what the labour envolved to account for his time!
You are well within your rights to ask him to give you a break down of it!

As far as i know the airfilter is just cleaned and put back in, because its only sponge?

should it be replaced?

The bike is restricted, so that may be a problem with the tuning aswell??

maybe the carbs have to be synced? i had backfire too when closing the throttle, but after syncing them it was gone and had a sweeter sound...
But i liked the "spitting fire", no car dared to drive close on my ass!

But this is not the only thing what's wrong... Mine never switched off..

Also, about the power gap at 6-7k and the air filter.. Mine is almost completely gone now, we soaked it in performance air filter oil...

Ill have a word with the mechanic,

dono if there is something wrong with it, my mates flies up to 12k/rpm easy and mine only goes to 10k/rpm,  :?:

can still do the same speed ( about 105mph), but with a 2k/rpm differance?

maybe a problem with the slingshot?

the exhaust kills my ears even at 6k/rpm think i need some earplugs  :stickpoke:

This is when its working, as it wont even start at the moment

My mechanic doesnt know wtf is wrong with it, he is trying lots of things.

like Coils / control box ect....

its stupid the amount this bike is costing me,
and now there is no point me selling it as i would never get the money back,
so i mite just leave it and let it sit in the corner of the garage till i get the money,
And buy a better bike, all i wona do is get to work and back, and have a fun bike.

Its great fun when it works!!!!

Your friend has the same exact bike?
Maybe it would be worth while to buy him some beer and borrow his carbs to see if your bike will run better than it is now.

What is the condition of the battery? Hard starts can sometimes be traced to an expired battery- although it will crank and crank, the system will have a hard time firing up the engine.

The battery has been charged, and tried a new one, but it still plays up.

Ive got two friends that have bandit 400's,  one the same as mine but in red, and one 1996 model.

but the one with the red one rides an SV650, so i mite knick his whole bike and transfer most of it over   . as my bike looks nicer!!!

sounds like carb icing to me, add some silkolene pro fst to your tank and see if the problem still occurs.

Its common on suzuki and kwackers in the uk/ireland climate.

edit: i should read the whole thread before replying, sounds like you have more than just carb icing probs.

Hmmmm...................

It runs well, but when i start it up in the morning it revs up to 8k rpm,
and idles there, have to leave it for ages then its ok,

checked the idle, its fine, and its ok sometimes,
it has its tantrems when im turning around or something it kicks up in the revs
till i turn it off im scared it will blow up lol, then its fine!!!

:crybaby:   Its so buggered lol, one more thing i have to pay for and im getting a differant bike,
this is pathetic, ill keep it as a project maybe!!
