Title: sprockets and tires
Post by: fireburster on March 11, 2010, 02:51:55 PM
I have a 93 bandit 400. I replaced the chain last october but they said the sprockets should be replaced also. I just want to confirm that i need a 14t front and 46t rear.

Also im thinking of getting some shinko 006 tires since mine are from 01. its 110/70-17 front and 150/60-17 rear? I see the faq says 160/60. I know i had 110/80 and 160/70 on there now.

Going to order some cr8e spark plugs also. Is it better to turn the carb then change the plugs? I got it started the other day and it had no idle just like last time i ran it.  Granted it has been all winter and I'm sure it needs a drive to really see how its doing.

Tire sizes are 110/70 front, 150/60 rear. Your gearing is right, I think they went to 46 on the rear in 93, 91-92's were 47, I'm running a 50 on the rear but it's a race bike. If it won't idle the pilot jets are plugged, the holes in these are tiny, first thing to varnish up when you don't put fuel stabilizer in it in the fall like you should. Only sure fix is pulling the carbs and giving them a cleaning.

i ran a can of sea foam through a tank then refilled and added stabil and ran it before storage.  I really dont want to tear into the carbs because the last owner just did a dyno jet kit in june in it so they should be clean.

im going to drain the tank and carbs and petcock. I cant say there isnt stuff in there. I see if that helps.

thanks for the tire and sprocket info. Now i just need to order and find time to put them on.

I'd avoid Shinko's (or stinko's as we refer to them) like the plague. They simply suck! Scotch tape has more grip then they do.  If money is the issue, I understand but you get what you paid for.... They gave me a set to test as a promo and I think I rode on them for 100 miles before attempting to cut them off my rims, they sucked that bad. I run Pirelli Diablo Super Corsa's on my bikes. Yes, they are expensive but nothing grips like them.

I searched here and lots of positives about them. I just drive to work and back 2 miles. Im not carving up any roads like most. Just a commuter.

Im running 14/47 and always thought the tyres were 110/70H and 150/70H.

In that case they are Ok. I ride my 400 like I stole it so handling is most important to me.

Anybody run the PR2's on their Bandits yet?  I ran one on the rear of my FZ1 and was VERY happy with the grip level and the mileage.  I see they only come in a 150/70 rear though.

Really?  I've never heard anyone say a negative thing about Shinkos.  On of Bandit Alley's longest running threads (http://forums.banditalley.net/index.php?topic=649.0) is all about loving Shinkos.  I have a couple friends running them, even on the track and they're happy with them.  I wouldn't hesitate to give them a shot.

Im running 14/47 and always thought the tyres were 110/70H and 150/70H.

150/70H is the tyre size according to the manual. However I also wear 150/60 on mine with one tooth smaller sprocket on the rear.

Choosing to put 150/60 means since the rear wheel is slightly smaller, the gearing should be longer if you want to have (roughly) the same rpm for the same speed.

150/60 are usually sportier/softer tyres than the 150/70

dang i know i looked on the faq here and swear is said 150/60. Now i wish i would have really looked at it. Im 6ft i could use the height, feels little small sometimes.  Just had a hard time finding a set that was 110/70 150/70 in my price range.

Interesting, sure enough right there in the owners manual (downloaded from here, thanks!) it shows 110/70 and 150/70.  I might have to give the Pilot Road 2's a whirl on the Bandit.  I mean, I know guys getting 9000 miles out of a rear on the bigger sport bikes.  I got really good mileage on my FZ1 but didn't get a chance to run it completely out.  And the grip was quite good as well.

Yea man I know lot's of guys who run them because they are cheap. Kinda like running a cheng chin tire if you have been around bikes for a long time. What I have experienced in the past with cheap rubber is that often you get what you pay for - which is usually not very much. However, I do know guys who run their shoot out tire on high HP Busa's that like them for straight line stuff, but no one I know runs them for running curves or track days.

I ride on the street the exact same tires that I race on, Pirelli, Diablo Super Corsa's. So I might be a bit biased on tires. But...when I tried the Shinko's, I could spin up the rear almost at will out of corners on my GSXR 750 and I couldn't lean as far as I do normally because the tire would go away in the rear or push excessively in the front. They never gave me any confidence that I wasn't going to be thrown down the track especially at any speeds above 100 mph or at full lean.

I'm running Shinko 009s now front and back, and while they may not last as long as a PR2 might, they are darn good, and half the price (seem like it anyway).  I haven't been afraid to lean into a curve at interstate speeds on either the Shinkos or the Pilot Road 2's.
As a matter of fact the Shinkos I'm running now tend to need less checking by the air gauge than the PR2s did.  I was constantly having to keep tabs on air pressure with the pr2s, but since putting the 009s on, I haven't filled them nearly as often.

I am 1,86m (or about 6ft1'' or 6ft 2'') and I have a 150/60. You will need to change at least the rear spring as the stock one is way too soft. Try changing, if you can, the whole rear shock unit with a longer one which will increase ride height as well. You will find a lot of info about what fits in the forum.

got the tires on and it rides awesome. feels way smoother then those old tires. Still need to get them over the 100 mile mark but they don't feel slippery at all.

Front tire balanced awesome but the back was odd. Didn't want to balance without more weights then id like i guess. Cant seem to tell though rides really smooth. Glad i got tires when i was going to hold off this year.
