Title: The notches on the cams
Post by: Erikkt on June 25, 2006, 05:07:41 PM
I was checking the valve clearance for the first time on the bandit the other day, they seemed fine, but I noticed that the notches on the two cams wouldn't line up exactly to each other. In the pictures in the service manual they are exactly pointing at each other, or at 360 degrees, exactly pointing away from each other. This is not possible on my cams, as the notches are slightly off of each other (not much...). Are the cams not installed correctly, or is this nothing to worry about?

Thanks!

Depends on how far off, but generally nothign to worry about (just slight cam-chain stretch).  Mine were slightly off too with 11.5k neglected miles....  bike runs just fine.

Well, since Most people are going to go with what the Factory Service Manual gives for information, and they give the following image:

I'd expect to find what's pictured.  The cam lobes should be set on the shafts correctly (seeing as the slot/groove on the end can be positioned absolutly Anywhere).

Hey, but that's just my take on the matter.  :stickpoke:

But the rest of us were talking about checking the valve lash/adjusting valves...  Not cam timing.
