Title: 2002 Bandit 1200 speedometer not working
Post by: bluebandit02 on January 30, 2018, 04:18:06 PM
Good day folks,
I know this has been discussed on here but it was years ago and it was suggested I start a new discussion. My back is the 2002 1200S

So the other day on my way to work my speedo started to go. I was going over 50km for sure but it wouldnt go any higher than 40km/h. When I came to a stop it would drop to zero then work properly (although delayed) until it reached 40km/h again. Now it doesnt work at all.

The needles sweep when i turn the ignition on and the tach and odometer work but nothing on the speedo needle.

I read in the old post to check the sensor on the countershaft cover for debris but other than that is there anything else I can do? There was also mention of schematics to assist with running the wire but they were on photobucket or something and dont seem to be available anymore.

Any suggestion would be great. Thanks

Check the pickup that's bolted onto the sprocket cover.  Then trace the wires up to the connector and from there to the speedometer.  There should be 3 wires, ground (B/W) and two others (they are different colors on either side of the connector) that run to the speedometer.  Look for frayed, or rubbed wires or poor/dirty/corroded connections.

I've had problems with my first Gen speedos... they are front-wheel activated, analog... the problem with them seems to be the needle starts to SWING after a while...especially on longer trips; for example, at 75 mph it may swing back and forth from 60 to 85, and you have to take the average!

I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the cable ... being dry? maybe the gear?

Well I was able to solve the problem simply by dumping all the water out that had collected in the connector between the speedo wires and the pickup on the sprocket ( its located under the seat. Just follow the wires up from the front sprocket).
