2004 B12 - Speedometer "plastic" glass broken....
« on: May 23, 2009, 06:13:48 PM »
I don't know how I managed it but the left "glass" covering the speedometer is broken on my bike....there is a nice crack in the middle...

First of all, it's annoying, but more importantly, I would like to limit the entry of water into the speedometer for obvious reasons...

The problem is the OEM part they sell is the whole top of the speedo (Part 4 on the microfiche) and it retails for 90$.....

Is there a way I could find only the "glass" (I know it's plastic) of the left side ?

Online or other...

Thanks !

If you can get the old one off you might use it as a template and make a new one.  I'd recommend Lexan but any clear plastic should work.

Take some pics of the dis-assembly and maybe we can put a write up with it.

Yeah...I thought about it but I don't know how to cut the circular shape in the plastic...(don't have the tool for it)

Also, I don't know if it's easy to remove from the speedo and replace with another one... (is it glued or molded with it, what's the thickness....etc)

That's why I was inquiring here first...to see if anyone has already done it or something...

If you can remove it then trace around it with an awl.  Use a disk sander/belt sander to clean it up to the line.  Alternatively, you could put a thick padding of masking tape (6-10 layers) and use a compass to draw the circle.  Fabbing a new one will be the easy part...   :duh:

Use a disk sander/belt sander to clean it up to the line

Which I don't have access to....

Actually...getting it apart won't be a problem at all...I guess I'll give it a try.....maybe with a dremel or something...if the edges are hidden behind the ring....it may not be dramatic if they are a bit rough..

Or take it to a place that repairs windows.  They have all sorts of glass and plastic stuff that I'm sure would be more than suitable.  And I'm sure they'd have the tools.  Probably wouldn't charge you more than a few bucks.

Ok guys....thanks for the suggestions but after taking the speedo apart....(had to take the cowlings apart anyway)
I quickly realised that the speedo's "glass" was molded into the plastic....from what I could see, I could not remove it without actually breaking the thing...

So I'm gonna wait for the moment and see if I can get my hand on a used one or something later...

Thanks !

In the meantime, to keep moisture out, put a piece of clear tape over the crack.
