Something I noticed while out riding today:

When I'm stopped and idling and I shift from 1st into neutral and let go of the clutch I don't get a clunk, but then when I grab the clutch and shift back into first or even 2nd I get a clunk.

Is that because the RPMs are too high? I noticed that when I'm downshifting while coming to a stop it doesn't clunk. I think it's idling at around 1800 rpms, should I adjust the idle, if so - how would I do that?

I know on my 05 bandit  I get a little bit of a clunk from nutrel to first gear, I would think your bike should be idling around 11k-13k and if the 97 is anything like mine th e adjustment is very easy to make its  a knob on the left side of the carbs. Also I changed over to a full synthetic and that made the shiffting a little smoother, not to mention greating increased gas mileage

Yeah, thats what I was thinking. I just bought the bike used so I'm not sure what type of gas or oil they were using, maybe I should just do an oil change.

Turn your idle down a tad. or tighten the clutch on it thats all.

Mine does the same thing...so has every bike I've ever owned. Just the nature of the beast.  :boohoo:

You can only adjust the 600's cause they have cable clutches. The 1200's are hydraulic, no adjusting.

that seems a tad high, if your bike idles at 11,000 RPM you should check your throttle


The clunk is a result of the transmission gears/shafts spinning. When you put the bike in gear everything stops, making the clunk sound. I'd say 1800 RPM is too fast, turn it down to about 1100 and it should be ok, you'll still get some clunk because the clutch and trans in a 1200 is pretty beefy and there is alot of mass spinning around, but it's normal. :motorsmile:

That's your problem right there.

B12 idle should be 1.2-1.3k.

Idle shouldn't be at 1800 unless you're a lonely girl looking for a cheap thrill.   :wink:

In addition... shifting to neutral will always result in less "clunk' than shifting to a gear.

Wow, isn't redline 11k on a 1200. :shock:

Wouldn't want to try and ride something that idles at 13,000rpm :stickpoke:   or would I  :wink:

I would!!!  Only problem is that it only gets about 7-8 miles per gallon.  It would also be fun to have for screwing with people who drive too close. I know that some people here knows exactly what I am talking about. :motorsmile:

Yup, Jay Leno told a story of melting a guys bumper that was following too close with his Y2K...I would LOVE to be able to do that to some of the jackasses that tailgate me!! :banana:
