Tuning Issues
« on: September 09, 2009, 02:21:51 PM »
Hey all,

I have a 2002 B12, which i purchased a D&D slip-on with race packing, a dynojet stage-1 kit, and a K&N panel filter for. First I put the pipe on, it sounded awsome!( it had a lot of hard decel pop) After a couple days, my neighbor and I started on the jet kit. We decided to cut a couple larger openings in the air box seeings how we were putting more fuel into it with the jet kit. After going to the largest main jet that came in the kit, we took the originals and kept drilling them bigger and bigger to the size they are now. (Approx a #130 Mikuni size) We went to a size 15 pilot jet, and made a retainer ring for the filter on the air box, now with no lid. Got the carbs tuned to a point where we were ok riding regularly again, but still had a lot of decel pop.

I did some research and followed the terrific instructions on PAIR Removal 101.
Since removing the Pair system I am still getting decel pop.
Between 4k-5k rpm at full throttle it feels like im dumping the clutch. ( feels like she got a shot of nitrous).

Any ideas, on how to smooth out the sudden burst of power?
Is my decel pop ever gonna go away, or is it the fault of the race pack?
After removing the pair system, I have a loud ticking I can hear that sounds like noisey valves. Is that normal? I have removed the covers twice to check that they are sealed.
Im just gonna let her sleep for a day or too till I can get a couple of opinions.
Thanks,
2002 B12S

Check the plugs... sounds to me like a lean condition with the airbox cover off and reported surging.

I put new plugs in and have about 500 miles on them, they look perfect. After taking off the Pair valve and hoses I started it up and had it shooting 12" flames out of the pipe. I backed off each pilot screw 1/2 turn, and moved the clips on the fuel needles. That got rid of the flames, and left me with this monster surge. When its not under load and I rev it, she hesitates like there is a restriction, and then it lets loose right in that 4k-5k range. I may take it next week to run it on a dyno just to get some concrete numbers. Would it be any different if I had pod filters on?

We went to a size 15 pilot jet,
My bad we went to a size 20 pilot jet.
After all this screwin around I called Dale and ordered the stage 2 kit without the filter. It turns out that Dale's stage 2 airbox kit is exactly what we need here except for the K&N panel and the airbox retainer (my neighbor machined one). Once it shows up and we get it in and tuned , I'll snap some pics of it.
After removing the pair system, I have a loud ticking I can hear that sounds like noisey valves. Is that normal? I have removed the covers twice to check that they are sealed.
It turns out the header bolts needed to be torqued after the pair removal. Bye bye ticking.
I'll post once things are under way again.
