« on: June 24, 2007, 09:12:25 PM »
i have a 96 b6 it has just over 9k on it. it has new plugs and wires. when you first start to ride it after i let it warm up for a while it has this killer dead spot between 1k to 2k rpm it spits and wants to die. its stock except a scorpion pipe . the pipe tie is turning black meaning its rich and you can smell gas when you first stat it. but the plugs look great they have 1k on them i dont know where to start looking . thanks

Mines been like that for 12 years now. Funny thing I was just thinking about fixing that too. I just sync'ed my carbs and noted that there was no way to make it run between 1500 and 2000rpm . It just jumps from 1500 to 2000rpm. It really seams bad when going real slow and making a turn between those rpm. I was thinking maybe the pilot jets may be clugged or maybe my starter circuit is stuck open just a tiny bit. I'm planning to clean my carbs real good and see if that helps. Right now I don't have time and don't know when I'll get to it. I'm going to get some seafoam and see if I can hold off on the real cleaning. I was looking at my starter cable and it looks like its a hair to short, I remember it being like that when I bought it and put it on years ago. I needed a cable and just went with it. I was looking at the parts fiche today and it has three starter cables and I'm bumb founded. Don't know what part # to order.

Make sure the starting enricher (choke) is completely closing. Then adjust the air screws. Sounds like you could be rich at idle. Maybe turn the air screws IN 1/4-1/2 turn.

Do you have a clean air filter?

Hmmmmm?  I put a D&D pipe on, holeshot jet kit and the ignition advancer.  It had a dead spot just above idle.  I got used to it eventually. Then, this spring I cut about 6" off the D&D can and it actually runs much better now.  I don't know why but it looks cooler too.  I guess it was rich and this leaned it out a bit maybe.  It could be too rich.  Carbs can be frustrating  sometimes.
