Title: B12 Clutch question
Post by: Red01 on September 10, 2007, 09:40:38 PM
Anyone do a clutch job on their B12 and remember what size the nut is in the middle of the clutch?

I went to install new clutch springs in my son's 1G and discovered I didn't have the right size socket. I had a 30mm and it was too big, but my next smaller socket, a 22mm was way too small.

If you have the basket open, you might be able to get cresent wrench on it the measure it. But, if I remember correctly, it is a 28mm.

I got that from your PM, Bill... but was hoping someone else might be able to confirm it.

I was able to get the thread size from the dealer, 24mm, the washer is 24.2 x 35 mm, but even the dealer, nor BikeBandit.com,  could not tell me the nut size.
But make sure that the 30 mm socket you have is going down over the nut and not setting on top when you spin it, I have had that happen to me.

The 30mm went over the nut all right, I could feel the slop between the socket and the flats of the nut
I got the same info from the dealer.
Even asked the one real good tuner/mech he has in his employ. He could only remember, "it's pretty big!"
I already knew that much.
They didn't have one of the nuts in stock, so couldn't find out that way.
Bit the bullet the other day and bought a set of six sockets from Sears. Covers 27, 28, 29, 30, 32 & 36mm. So now I have two 30mm sockets... who knows, maybe someday I'll need 'em both at the same time.

Well,  the boy has his new Barnett springs in there now. We'll have to see if that cures his high rpm (>9K RPM) slippage. If not, it'll be new clutch pack time, I guess. He is pushing close to the 'average' 50K mile life span. I was a little lazy and didn't measure plate thicknesses (we got a late start and I just wanted to get in and out before bedtime), but the fibers & metals all looked good, with no obvious signs of trouble.

As for the socket Q:

Tried the new 28mm.

Too small.

Tried the new 29mm.

Too small.

Tried the new 30mm.

Fit like a glove. Wierd.  Both my old 30mm and the new 30mm are 12 point, 1/2" drive, Craftsman sockets. The new one sure fits the nut better. The old one had me certain the nut was smaller than a 30, it fit so sloppy.
Oh well.   Got some new tools...  :bandit:
