Title: B6 full fairing build
Post by: JRK5892 on September 26, 2011, 04:56:34 PM
first... i know this is not your typical fighter... i have to keep the fairing on it... i ride in the winter year round and need the wind protection, i will just set it up so come spring i can pull it off for a fighter lamp when i sell her

figured it was time to start a build thread as i will be making some real progress on here now
this bike is not built to LOOK cool, it is built to function, it is road every day rain or shine 80 miles total... it is a work horse

when i got her she was pretty much stock... so i added to that ended up with this... extended shield, heated grips, blacked out mirrors, airbox cover,a dn frame rail, added bags, HID headlight, 14T front sprocket, lower wing guards, and 3rd brake light
looked like this
(https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/223651_10150277878423073_594008072_7767231_1055058_n.jpg)

then i got the itch... tore off the controls and coated them, re cut the seat and re wrapped it, and added custom chrome heated grips for adjustable temp

then the screw up came.... added decals

also added some fogs for better vision at night

then the evolution kept going
(https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/298029_10150299106043073_594008072_7968919_6636688_n.jpg)

added amber LEDs to be seen better at night

then raised the back end to quicken steering

now i wanted some mroe sound out of the bike

then all hell broke lose this weekend... tore down for paint and powder, GSXR rear suspension, progressive front
started with a tail chop

then i had to make a floating rear fender to keep crap off me in the rain

some time on the belt sander later... we are golden

bent and welded up some round bar to use as a support (doing a larger rear tire so i could not finish mounting it)

pulled the 10000000 bolts from the valve cover to set the valves and coat the cover
(http://oi51.tinypic.com/263ha14.jpg)

and how she sits now
(http://oi53.tinypic.com/14w6mc3.jpg)

now i have to decide if i want to suck it up and pay the 68 bucks for bearings for the swing arm and coat the swing arm to match the frame... paint work starts tonight... i have to keep the full fairing (for now) cause i will be riding all winter.. come spring i can pull it for a fighter set up
Title: Re: B6 full fairing build
Post by: JRK5892 on September 26, 2011, 04:59:03 PM
as far as upgrades go... i have gone to a 94 remote resivor GSXR rear shock, 15 w fork oil (may do progressive springs), 14 t pulley, removed last baffle in pipe (did not have to shim), synced the carbs.... and will set the valves... anything that i am missing you would sugest for me to do while i have it all torn down?

also any sugestions on where i can get swing arm bearings that are not crazy $... i think i shoud powder my swingarm as well

spent a good amount of time last night cleaning my airbrushes... sad, never let friends borrow stuff if they are not going to bring them back in better condition than they borrowed them! After i was completed with that i set out to start to prep...
all the plastics and the tank are now blocked out and ready for primer! TONIGHT!

front fairing

Rear fairing
(http://oi52.tinypic.com/2505a20.jpg)

cut thought the clear with block sanding to remove the suzuki decals... then blocked that out so it is smooth
(http://oi53.tinypic.com/2zq76md.jpg)

also cleaned up the GSXR rear shock... and got the resivor shot

well made some great progress! ya buddy!!!! everythign but the tank is in base coat... was able to get it all primered and blocked out last night and then the base coat of semi gloss black down... will do some red air brush work with silver highlights, then flat clear the whole thing... also... got the swing arm pulled and bearings out... now the ? is...... what color do i do the arm... should i coat it flat black to match the lowers and engine cases... or do it red to match the frame?

primer

and base coat (sorry so hazy snapped with a cell in the booth)

and i still have to paint this stuff... i am going to lightly blast it in the cabinet to get it smooth and get out the texture that these parts have... ill do that while prepping up the swing arm

Well, got alot done... worked on some airbrush work yesterday when i woke up.  Came out great. Used opaque red as the main color and then a tranlucent pearl silver to accent it all... just need to lay the clear... back and forth on matt or satin clear... but i have time to decide that

then focus turned to the powder work... we where able to get almost everything coated yesterday... the wheels turned out sick

I also got my new tires in... so i slapped those on the wheels... used dyna beads to balance her out so that no wheel weights would ugly up the rims
(http://oi51.tinypic.com/2m5xeva.jpg)

and prepped and blasted the swing arm... ill get that coated in black some time today
(http://oi56.tinypic.com/a44ow0.jpg)
Just have the 2 front rotors, swing arm, engine cases, and 2 levers to coat

sounds good! i will go with a satin clear then... i think that is the way to go as well, the flat to me will take away to much from the airbrush work, i tried to tie in the pearl silver in there to make it pop a bit under the dull down clear and the test pannel i shot worked out awesoem with the flat... but to me was too flat ya know... i think satin is the way to go as well. hahahah an keep me from having to wet sand a gloss! hahaha

"hahahah an keep me from having to wet sand a gloss! hahaha"

as you may know by now :stickpoke: i've worked in a paint bodyshop in the past, mainly on body repair side of things..cars.. done fair bit of painting.. but no way am i professional resprayer,
still have same pic's of cars paintwork done @ home!!.

when i  resprayed my b4 i was not sure whether to wet sand the gloss or not! i did in the end and it came up great once i put the clear coat on, ...am not sure if am right!...you can clear coat with out flatting, as along as its done at the same time.. ie... not hours later. otherwise it won't bond together! and may at a later date start to feel.

b4 still looks good ten years on.

my achievement is partly through mopping or Machine polishing to get the level of shine, i still have my super stork polishing machine after!!... now that would give my age away!!

i mix a flatening agent in with my clear when i am mixing it... you can not wet stand that because durring buffing stage to get out the cut from the wet sand you will basicly buff the paint out and give it a gloss... the trick is to shoot the paint a bit more thinned out then the tech sheet calls for. this will basicly give you a glass smooth paint... that is how i shoot flat/satin

that is how i shot this fighter i built last year, perfect smoooooth

quick ?... buddy of mine just tried to help me out and install my clutch lever and snapped the clutch possition switch pend that goes into the clutch lever... i do not really care about hving the switch but i know the bike will not start without it... can i by pass the switch by soldering up the 2 wires together?

got the tank blocked out and base coat is on... put on the sprocket cover... LOVE THE LOOK of the flat black cases! LOVE IT!!!! between coats i was also able to get the valves set... but i do have 1 question... I did not have the valve tool, but was able to hold the adjuster with a needle nose plier and lock them in... when i broke the jam nut lose on these suckers they where TIGHT, not just the valve setting but also the jam nuts... i mean TIGHT... i snugged them up pretty good but did not go nuts... i do not see any specific tq setting for it of course, but was wondering from anyone that has done the valves on this bike, how tight do i have to get these jam nuts?

*also promise to get a real camera out there with me some time soon

well made out a check list i can follow so i can try and get this sucker on the road again this weekend...
yesterday got the engine cases back on... fork lowers assembled (have not added fluids yet i am still back and forth on if i want to run 20w or 15w... so i think i may run a 50/50 blend in the forks.

well paint is now 75% done... god i can not belive how much paint work is going into this bike! Granted i am painting EVERYTHING, even the frame plugs, but man... well last night i got everything i am shooting at least in primer... got a base coat on the 2 last pieces that i have to do air brush work on... hit the shield so i can airbrush that and the rear fairing cover... so all i have to airbrush is the tank indents, the shield, back cap on tail piece, side covers, and 2 frame caps.... from there just clear it all... the rest of the plastics you see in white primer will get a base coat of satin black, 2 coats of reflective clear, and 2 coats of satin clear... i do not watn to run reflectors on the build at all but still i ride it daily and need to be seen, dont want to vanish on a black bike, this is a cool little trick that will vanish in the day and bling at night...

here are some pics... yes still with the crap cell hahaha

between coats i got the cases on (still need to put on the valve cover)

fork lowers assembled
(http://oi52.tinypic.com/s4noue.jpg)

all the plastic random stuff in primer and hanging waiting on base and top coat
(http://oi56.tinypic.com/10fn71g.jpg)

shield and tab in the booth
(http://oi54.tinypic.com/dzgexf.jpg)

10/6/11
did not get many pics from last night but got all the randon plastics hit in the base coat, reflective clear, and satin clear, wheel bearings in, fork oil {blend 15w(75%) and 20w (25%)} we will see how that runs... got the guages assembled and all soldered in again.

hahahaha Chicago... i am the guy in Jan suited and booted ripping down the road at -5 degrees hahaha... that is why i want the fairiing on there and i am not building a street fighter...

got the paint work 85% done... all the black has been shot, the tail fairings are shot and cleared, all the little odds and ends plastic deals are shot, reflective clear, and satin cleared....
only left on the paint work is to clear the front fairing side pannels, airbrush and clear the tank and small back section of the tail, and main windshield... then paint work is DONE!

with any luck the swingarm bearings will be there today and i can get the wheels back on this sucker and shorten the wires up a bit for the HID, hand warmers, and few other odds and ends... Saturday put back on the plastics and add fluids... and ride this sucker!

I like the flat black a lot.  I don't have equipment or place to spray though.  Is there a decent brush on flat black paint someone could recommend?

you can rattle can it fi you do not have propper paint equipt. i have rattle canned a ton of bikes. if you take your time and do it right you can get amazing results!... painters touch rustoleum... use satin black and the matt clear. follow the directions close!

oooh ya, all the flat black on the bike is powdercoat (and the red) the satin black on all the plastics is paint

But nothing brush on? Have neighbors in 'very' close proximity who would object to spray fumes, probably including from cans.

you live in an appt? shoot it outside on the deck? heck i shot a whole bike in my spare room when i was in college in an apartment. just tarped the piss out of it, used a furnace filter in front of a box fan and put the box fan in the window.... barely smelled at all man

well... GOT ALOT DONE!!!! was able to finish the airbrush work on the tank, covers, front shield, and then also lay the clear down. from there rebuilt the Front and rear brakes, installed new brake pads, installed the valve cover, forks rebuilt and installed, front fender installed, and brakes put on as well as the fork brace.  wired in switches into the plastics, installed GSXR rear shock and located the resivor, installed rear turn sigs.
Left to do: shorten wires up and clean them up, wire rear turn sigs, add plastics, install swing arm and bearings (they are still not here or i would be riding), add rear wheel. go over everything... then work on the rear floating fender on the rear tire

here are the pics:

wiring wiring wiring... spent 4 or 5 hours with a soldering iron in my hands shortening and soldering wires to length. make it look nice and tight. LEDs are all wired and ready to go, eliminated the clutch switch, some more odds and ends, then got the front fairing mounted

on the grip warmers i removed the casing and made a box for the electronics under the back side of the fairing and ran the knob though the plastics for a cleaner look you can see the small LED light tapped in front of that as well

so... I PROMISE to get a real camera tomorrow... promise!
all I have left is to add fluids, install lower wind deflectors on the forks, 3m protective tape on the rear fairing, install saddle bags, make (coat and weld) rear floating fender (this will be done tomorrow some time), mount shock resivor

yesterday: got new swing arm bushings in, installed swing arm and dog bones, got rear wheel in place, mounted and installed fog lights, finished leds, installed rear fairings/grab rails, installed exhust (with copper seal), final mounted front fender, lubed and cleaned chain, installed tank, put back on the seat

i am glad that i left the exhaust chrome rather than coating it, i kind of like how it stands out... but i have another header so i may just coat it and toss it on to see how i like it... bike looks like it could be in a comic book, love it so far... the suspension feels great but i have not rode it yet, not you typcial fighter but it should handle 10x's better... carbs where synced and balanced before tear down, valves set, float needle adjusted, baffle removed, progressive suspension up front with 15w oil, rear GSXR shock with remote resivor, 170 rear tire, new pads, rebuilt brakes... bike should handle betterthan ever!

black swing arm was 100% the right call!

again i promise that i will get a real camera on this sucker to do it some justice! was pouring today and last night so i did not want to roll it out there

OK... well i will start out by saying WOW... what a blast to ride! the suspension upgrades are spot on!!! she was a bit slick at first with the new rear tire but now i have 120 miles on her she sticks like glue! seems to have more throttle response now that the valves are adjusted and the carbs are dialed in...

last night Tim and i got to work on the floating rear fender...

bent some round bar to act as a support, then moved on to the fender portion

first we did a mock up and then tacked it in
(http://oi53.tinypic.com/2nj9bh4.jpg)

bracket done
(http://oi55.tinypic.com/30cwpk2.jpg)

made up and welded on a bung to conect to the chain guard to keep it from moving around
(http://oi51.tinypic.com/2ciss4.jpg)

also cut and shaved/bent a support bracket to keep it from moving up and down
(http://oi52.tinypic.com/15rnxn9.jpg)

and mock up on the bike

Not completely done as of yet, still have to powder coat it, going to 2 tone this, do the bracket in red, and the lid in flat black... then have to drill and tap the swing arm to make the lower mount bolt up

also was out riding at night figured i would post up a night shot with LED's on

You really rocked the build JRK;  But not knowing anythg about floating fenders, Im bit skeptical bout longevity(durability). Bike looks like someone spent a winter getting it to this point. Maybe I better look over original post date. cant get a grip on your accomplishmts.   well you will be ready to rock chicago this winter. good job.   sandy

i got a bit over 1000 miles on the biek since i added the fender. it is all welded up solid so it iwll not move, the main mount at the belt guard has duel mount points (main and then the lower bolt we made for it) this keeps it from moving. then the belt guard has a hole in it where the 3rd mount location is... does not move at all... and to be honest works awesome! keeps allthe rain and crap down off my back... she runs awesome in the cold weather. left my house today and it was 18* she ran like a rape ape all the way to the shop (45 min)

Well… not even 3 months after the build I am on a on ramp to get on the highway… guy cuts across 3 lanes to try and make the ramp… in doing so clips my front end, i must have over corrected after he hit me, or something... it all happend so fast... bottom line is it washes me out at 50mph… I go down and hard… he just keeps driving… and to me the worst part is… no one even got out to check if I was ok… after I got done rolling and sliding, a guy actually drove around me as I was layin on the road… people make me sick! Bike is not horrible, bag took most of the brunt, clutch cover is cracked and leaking oil everywhere, foot control is snapped… Thank god I was in my lid!

then to top it all off... after i get the bike on the trailer and back home. i get in my truck to drive in to the shop... and i get rear ended... unreal!!!!

Hi JRK5892

My first thought were when i saw your pictures was that something had giving up on the bike.. till i read your post.

You say the bike not horrible..but it must still hurt after all the work you'll put in and not even 3 months on the road  AND  he just keeps driving and no one stopped... I be seeing red  :rant2:

in France trying to force all motorcyclists to wear high visibility fluorescent vests in an unfounded attempt to reduce the number of accidents on highways... what good will there do!! When other road users don’t evening bother to look in the first place.

then to get rear ended ....we all could do without days like that, but good to see you walked !.. way from it.

Greeting JRK. glad u r ok. had to reread post to make sure after looking at pics. Dont worry bout other driver. It is a full time job to teach jerks lessons.  more time than I want to invest.  Glad u r ok, had a similiar deal once. Riding in rain. two lanes each way. Im in left lane a woman pulls out from rt lane in front of me stops. to make a lt turn. I hit her my passenger and myself flew over her car landing in road.  She makes her turn and attempts to leave. but worse part. left us to all oncomming traffic. She was driving her new electra225 home from dealership. playing with radio buttons.  moral of our experience. watch out for others. they dont watch out for U.   sandy
