I have picked up a 2000 Bandit 1200s and on start up with a cold engine there's a lot of top end ticking , almost a rattle, going on. The noise quiets down when warm and it runs well otherwise. Bike has 13000 miles and is stock.
I'm wondering if the valves need adjusting. Can the valves be real loud and not be causing damage? Was told on another site that these are tough engines and like to make noise. I'm new to inline fours and need some help.[/i]

It sounds like you're about due for a valve adjustment. At 13,000 miles, this is normal. It's a good idea to look at the cam chain and tensioner while your at it.
The noise goes away because metal expands as it heats up. So you're probably just within tolerances at operating temperature, but loose when cold.
It probably isn't damaging anything at this point, but I wouldn't wait much longer. If you don't feel like you can do this yourself, make sure to take it to a good mechanic with a solid reputation.
