Bandit clutch question
« on: July 22, 2012, 09:49:09 PM »
Guys,

I have a 02 B12 the clutch seems is odd to me . I also ride a Honda Goldwing and I don't know if this is the difference in the two bikes or not. The clutch seems to grab at the end of the handle.  It grabs fine it just seems to me it grabs at the very end of the handle. The Goldwing grabs in the middle.  Is it time for a new clutch or is this normal. I tried changing the adjustment knob to see if that changes the grab distance but it didn't.  I already changed the fluid and bled the lines, I'm just not sure.

Thanks,

Joe

Not much you can do to adjust the engagement point.  If the clutch isn't slipping, it's still good.  B12 clutches usually go ~50K-60K miles, less if abused, more if you don't use it a lot.

perhaps true for Gen 2 bike, but Gen 1 clutches are much weaker unless bolstered with a stronger spring.

replaced mine with 24 k.  Much better luck with Barnett spring

Thanks that is exactly what I tried to describe "engagement point."  Unlike the Goldwing which is in the middle the Bandit is at the end.  So I've stalled it a few times especially after the stage kit but that's me.  Going from bike to bike is really odd. But they would be they were built for different types of riding. Having 2 bikes is great!!! Now can I find an excuse for a third? Adventure tourer or Hyabusa???  :banghead:

My son's 1G went 55K before replacement.  We did toss in the Barnett springs then though.  To be fair and honest though, it should have been replaced at ~50K.
My 2G had ~55K on it when I sold it and it was still on the OE clutch, but I did put 1 Barnett spring in it early on, just based on recommendations from others.

actually this is my 3rd clutch.  My mechanic decided to ignore my request and instead replaced the clutch with Banrnett internals & stock springs, this combo didn't last 10k miles.  I also used diesel oil during that time & was informed on the Bandit R Us e-mail group that this might  problem (along with synth oil too).

anyway, I probably have 40K+ with the Barnett spring with stock internals and it's been going good and no slip.  Feels like a "man's bike" every time I grab the clutch!  (then I rode a 1990 Moto Guzzi, tried to yank the throttle & found out that I am still a limp-wrist pussy).

What year is your bike. I adjusted my GEN2 bandit 1200(2001-06) to engage in the middle. Just adjust the lever, it has little numbers on it so you can dial it in. Problem solved.
2005 Bandit 1200, Modified Holeshot Stage 1 with 17.5 pilots 2.75 turns out, and 110 mains 5 shims. Muzzy Slip on w/mid-pipe, stock filter. 1.5" hole in the airbox lid.

That only adjusts the reach, not where in the throw it engages.

Yes but if the reach is shorter it will hit the handle bars sooner so the clutch "feels" like it's engaging closer to the handle bars which is I'm assuming what he wants.
