cam install questions
« on: October 12, 2007, 08:20:13 AM »
i just got the cams from a gsxr1100. do they use the same gears and timing marks as the bandit? is it better to use both cams or just the intake? will i need a new pipe or is the mid-pipe and can ok? D&D bolt on is on it now but i have a hole shot mid-pipe and can. what kind of power increase is there for just the intake and with both cams? is there a piston kit with more compression and stock bore? i want more torque!!!!!  i want my Bandit to be a lean mean ZRX stompin wheel standing tire spinning machine. forgot it's a 1st gen 1200

The route you are taking with the GSXR Cams will move your HP and Torque higher in the RPM range, taking away from the bottom end and adding to the top end. To bring the torque back up, you will need higher compression pistons, and if you tear the engine down to replace the pistons you might as well go with a bigger piston. Holeshot sells a 1216 JE piston kit that still has low enough CR to be good for street ridding. I have a set of 1186 pistons that I believe are 12 to 1, that I took out of an engine that I was putting a 1216 kit in. PM me and maybe we can work a deal were you pay the postage and you can have them if you want, I will never have a need for them. I will get the part # from them to see if I can get the specs.
If I didn't have a Suzuki, I would have a Kawasaki

You MUST use the cam gears from the Bandit. The GSXR has a different chain & sprocket arrangement. (You'd have to have a GSXR crank to run the GSXR chain & cam sprockets.)

Most folks doing a cam change use the 750 cams, but the principals should be the same. You'll save a little of the bottom end if you keep the B12 exhaust cam at the sacrifice of a couple-three HP on top.

If you want more torque (bottom-end & midrange), a big-bore and/or high compression kit is gonna do that for you. Gixxer cams are more for HP (top-end). You can get a good idea how this works by looking at these charts from Holeshot
(Click here). These start with a B12 with his 11:1 pistons, headwork, stage II jet kit, 5* advancer & his slip-on and then adds a GSXR 750 intake cam, then his full header system. The next set of charts compares this last setup against the same mods, but with his 1216 pistons. You'll see quite a jump in torque across the board with the 1216, but peak hp isn't much more - and happens at a lower rpm.

so it looks like the only way to get max H.P. and torque is to go into the motor. i was kinda trying not to go that way yet bike only has 2000 miles on it but if thats what it takes i'll think about it this winter. im not carzy about Dale's pipe i know he's trying to keep the cost down but i think it takes away from the look of the Bandit. if i need the go with a new pipe i'll spended the bucks for yosh pipe or something along that line. does the gsxr pipe and cylinder fit on the Bandit?

The GSXR pipe won't fit without changing to a GSXR oil pan. The route the pipe differently than the B12.

The 1127cc GSXR cylinder block will fit, but why? It's got a smaller bore than the 1157cc B12 block.

Just bore the one you've got.  I've heard the B12 block has more meat to it to take the overbore better (ie; less issue with cooling).

There's also the APE Racing "Gorilla" big block... mostly designed for those going to a 1277 or bigger.

You have to use the bandit sprocket;
http://gsxrzone.com/sprockets.html

If you are only going to 1216cc, you can use the GSXR 1127 block. If you want to go to 1147, you need the bandit block.

As for an opinion on the cams themselves, if you are mainly a street hooligan just use the intake.  It pulls like the stocker up to around 6k and then pulls harder all the way to redline.  You will hit the rev limiter the first few times you really flog it until you get used to it as it won't lay down at 9500 rpm like a stocker does. The exhaust cam will kill a little of the bottom/mid range without more compression and you can always add it later if you need a little more punch on top.  The overlap of the valves drops the compression at lower revs which the higher compression will compensate for.  On a related topic, increasing the gear ratio to a 15/47 or 15/48 will be important to smooth it out on the bottom and makes for a freight train in the acceleration department as a bonus.  The stock 15/45 will stumble at off idle (leaving a stoplight) without some super tuning abilities IMO.   FYI intake +5 to 7hp  from 6k up, both -2 or 3hp up to 5k and up 7-10hp from 8k up as a ballpark figure.

Easier way:
88-89 750R head or 750F head on a 1127 or B12

These heads fit as they are, and give higher compression, better ports, larger squish.
In the case of the 91-92 1127R you'll need to use the 750 camshafts as well, since the
91-92 1127R uses shim type camshafts and the 750 head is forked rocker type. If you use the
91-92 1127R cam shaft sprockets they can be timed as in the manual.
In the B12's case you could use the B12 or the 750 cams (although they have different profiles)
but will have to use the B12 cam shaft sprockets because of the different cam chain.
In the case of the 88-90 1127R you can use the 750 or 1127 cams, and use the 1127 cam sprockets
(timing 'by the book') or use 750 cam sprockets (timing to be done by yourself)
