Title: Chinese OEM filters?
Post by: ldbandit76 on November 28, 2005, 11:51:29 AM
I just ordered a pile of OEM B12 filters from Ron Ayers to replace my dwindling stock.  It seems Suzuki has found a lower cost supplier for filters since last I bought one.  My old filters were made in Japan; the new ones are made in China.  Oddly, the new ones cost more, too, so I guess someone is making money.

But that's not really the issue.  Has anyone torn apart one of the new filters to see if it compares well with the old ones?  With the every-other-oil-change schedule, I'd like to make sure the filters are up to snuff.

Or is that my job, since I have at least one of each, and noticed it?

I use the STP SM0-18.

They are rated very well... are about 1/2 the cost of the OEM's.. and are readily available at auto parts stores (Like Autozone)

I thought someone recently criticized the STPs for quality or quality of filtering compared to OEM?  I could be wrong.

Now THAT was interesting!  Looks like the Suzi filter is the best bet to me, even with a higher price.

Sounds like LD needs to mail that guy one of the new Chi-zuki OEMs to see if they still rate the same.  He offers to add them to his analysis.

I use Perf-Form J-509. I buy several whenever I order anything from Holeshot. The times when I've needed to change the filter (and I change it at every oil change, not every other one as the book recommends) and not had one onhand I've used the STP, Purolator and OEM filters (once each). I still have one of each sitting in the garage and I've been meaning to cut them open for a look-see, but so far, haven't done it.

I've e-mailed him.  We'll see where that goes.

I'll probably go for the perf-form filters next, but my current stockpile should last me until 2008 or so...

And I'm in touch with Mark from CalSci.  He's agreed to take a filter, so we'll see what he has to say about it.

He also asked about the nipple the filter screws onto.  I'm going to start a separate thread for that question; it's an interesting experiment, though I'm not sure how much benefit there may be.
