Justa quick questioon,

A friend of mine has a 1999 bandit 600, his exhaust has totally rotted thro, does any body in the Bandit 600 world know if, the Bandit 600 engine will accept an exhaust from another bike.

Thats loads in advance.

This must be a UK unique thing... I've not heard of it happening to bikes in other parts of the world who post here, yet Banditmania in the UK advertises Bandit collector box and intermediate pipe repair.

What part has rotted? The header collector? More?

Whole system:
Bandit 600, 1999-earlier
Bandit 1200, 2000-earlier

Header only:
Bandit 600, any year
Bandit 1200 any year

Systems from other bikes with similar engines may fit, but may require the oil pan and oil pickup tube from the donor bike.

the part that has rotted out, is the underside of the 4-1 collector, have got no idea, how this happened, cas the pipes are stainless on the 600's aion't they??

the uk is a island in the middle of one big salty pond would be my guess why they have the rust issues!

But it's not the ONLY place with rust issues.

But given the Bandit is a MUCH more popular bike in the UK than the US, I guess I can understand why someone has advertised a fix for a blown collector, where here in the US, one would just source a different pipe from a less rusty part of the country.

Yes, the pipes are stainless... but that doesn't mean corrosion-proof (obviously), just more resistant to corrosion. Different stainless alloys have different corrosion resistant properties. This alloy is likely not the highest resistant.

Without exception, in the UK, every single bandit fitted with standard exhausts will, after a few years, have a rotted collector box. If you look through the bike trader, almost every bandit over 4 years old that's for sale, has either had the collector repaired, a stainless set of downpipes fitted, or has a hole in the collector. So common is it, that several companies offer a repair service specifically mentioning the bandit collector box in there adverts!!

I understand the original is mild steel. That and the lovely winter we get and the local council's eagernes to cover the roads in salt and grit at the merest hint of a frost.

You're in a colder, moist climate and your rides are probably of short duration. Your pipes don't get hot enough to burn out the water and you get puddles in there as its the low spot of the exhaust. Guess that's what the aftermarkets for.

They rott because we have crap weather so when we go out we dont get to give the bike a good blow before it rains. Have heard of a few poeple with the same problem, but cant say I have had it. Shit weather plus shit roads = rotten metal, its not just bandits which suffer.

Put a race can on and have the collector box looked at they can be fixed!

Ditto, I'm in the UK and the collector box on my '97 B6 had been replaced before I bought the bike 18 months ago.
