easy wheelies on my 600 would be nice
« on: September 01, 2005, 01:25:24 PM »
Ok, so for anyone out there that has ideas and can help..

I'm looking to get my stock 600 to wheelie on throttle, without having to slip the clutch (I'm gentle on the mechanics) with as little money spent as would be possible, though money isn't a drastic problem.

One obvious factor I can think of is to change the rear sprocket for one more teeth.. But I'm not sure by how much changing front or rear sprockets will affect the speedo reading and as close to 'accurate' as possible readings with the stock clock system would be nice (police here love to target bikers, I don't like being done for speeding).

My bike is an 02 600, so the speedo isn't from the front wheel and from what I can gather, I would need a little electronic box (details of which don't spring to mind) to adjust this which I recall being around £100.. Plus the cost of a new rear sprocket.

So that's one option I have in my head.

FYI an aftermarket can is something I have had fitted previously (removed at the moment, again due to police & non road legal can) which improved throttle response and could go back on the bike if needed..

Does anyone have any suggestions with rough prices?
Thanks a bunch :)

Gearing changes will effect the accuracy of the speedo. Going in the direction you suggest, will make the speedo even more optimistic than it already is - probably 5-10%. If you figure out how optimistic, you can quickly learn what actual and indicated speeds are and save the expense of the Yellow Box or similar product.

Wheelies are easier if you sit as far back as you can, put on more weight (us fat boys can wheelie easier than the bean poles), carry a passenger or other weight as far aft as you dare.

Besides gearing and weight, the other way is more power...

And cue the influx of hopefully cheapish, effective power increasing mods

I'm not fat, neither is the girlfriend.. so that doesn't help. Plus getting the front wheel in the air isn't something I'd want to do with her on the back anyway, chances are she'd fall off haha. I have tried sitting as far back as is comfortable though then tried, but alas it doesn't pack the power... yet!

Jet kit & slip-on would be first, followed by standard hop-up things (not so cheap) like full header, cams, pistons, head work. Most find at this point its better to either swap in a bigger motor like a Katana or early GSXR 750 or 1100 or B12 - or sell the B6 and buy a more powerful machine.

I own a B12 not a B6, so wheelying is not a problem for me
But what you need is torque.  Having 100hp at 10,000 rpm won't help you very much.  So probably I would think:  Exhaust, jet kit, and then cams (you could look at different grinds - maybe some are designed for top end others for bottom and mid?), and then some compression.  High comp is always good for torque, but you are stressing the engine more, might need bigger oil cooler?
So take your time and you might find it's easy with the right bits, not just rush into the firt set of cams/pistons/jets/pods/whatever you see, coz if they only boost top end power - you probably won't be much better off!
That's impressive,
and I'm not easily impressed.

First off if you think the cop are hard on speeders wait till you get slapped for the wheel in the air. :duh:
I have a B6 and have a 50rear and can rollon wheelie at low speed in first. I never really checked but I think about 4000 on the tac up to red line.
If you drop one thooth on the front its like three up on the back and should wheelie ezer, and its the cheapest and ez to change back.
You won't do any wheelies at freeway speed unless you have mad cash and skills, or a diffrent bike.  :beers:

Haha I can imagine. To be fair I'd really only pull wheelies when I've stopped and made sure there's practically zero traffic, so I think I'd avoid police easily enough.
So you went from a stock 47 rear to a 50 and I'm assuming that plus the holeshot can are the only mods which would affect performance to get your front end up?
If that's the case I may just get one of the speedo adjusters I mentionned and go for the sprocket change then  :beers:
