HOW MUCH OIL - 2001 (1200cc) Bandit
« on: November 26, 2007, 03:55:05 PM »
How much oil does your 2001  1200cc  - BANDIT TAKE ?

I dumped the oil and waited till it was done dripping.
Changed out the filter also
I bought a big "BLUE" bottle of
SHELL ROTELLA  Synthetic 5-40 oil from WALMART.
I poured almost the whole thing in, it is fulkl up to the "F" line on the window.....

It looks like # qts on the bottle.
But
My old 78 GS1000 took 5 full qts to fill her up..

Is this right, or did I not get all the old oil out..

How much is "# qts"? Three?  Are you talking about US quarts or Imperial quarts?

It should take ~3.8 US quarts to do an oil & filter change.
After you've drained the oil and changed the filter, fill it to the full mark (don't forget to replace the oil filler cap on the clutch cover!), start the engine and let it run for a couple minutes, check for leaks, shut it down, let the oil settle for a couple more minutes, then top it off to the full mark again.

If you use the centerstand, "full" will be about halfway between the Min & Max lines next to the window.  The lines are placed to go with the owners manual's instructions for checking the oil with the bike level on level ground with both wheels on the ground.  When it's on the centerstand, more oil will be at the front, that's why the window is off when it's on the centerstand.

This is coppied and pasted out of the 2001-2002 service manual.

Quote
• Start up the engine and allow it to run for several minutes at
idling speed.
• Turn off the engine and wait about three minutes, then check
the oil level through the inspection window 4. If the level is
below the “L” mark, add oil to the “F” mark. If the level is above
the “F” mark, drain the oil until the level reaches the “F” mark.

%NECESSARY AMOUNT OF ENGINE OIL
Oil change: 3.3 L (3.5/2.9 US/Imp qt)
Oil and filter change: 3.5 L (3.7/3.1 US/Imp qt)
Engine overhaul: 4.6 L (4.9/4.0 US/Imp qt)
If I didn't have a Suzuki, I would have a Kawasaki

i use the same rotella 1 u.s. gal   = 3.78 litres which is almost exactly correct with a filter change
