I have a B6 so I have no fuel gauge but on cars I've owned I normally find that when a gauge becomes erratic, its an electrical problem.  Probably a bad ground.  I had a bad ground on a car and out of the blue the oil gauge would register zero and the temp gauge would go to max.  I'd freak out and pull over only to find nothing wrong.  After finding the corroded ground wire all was good.

Sounds pretty typical from what i hear... I know mine just shows what ever it feels like.. keep an eye on your trip odometer

Probably a bad ground.

+1

Next on the list is a poor connection in the wiring somewhere.

Mine did the same thing. Check the connections under the tank. The spade terminal needed to be recrimped on the ground. Also check the plastic clip under the side panel.

I never trust the fuel gauge on any vehicle, been caught out too many times.

I always reset the Trip meter to zero and when I get to around 180-200km I start thinking about looking for petrol.
