Valve adjust, carb synch and...a stutter at 5-6K?
« on: May 01, 2006, 02:07:17 PM »
Hi,

I just finished my first valve adjust and carb synch (should I clean the mercury out of my eye? ) and have a question.  Here is what I did:

1) The valves where tight so I adjusted them to spec.
2) I synch'd the carbs.  #1 and #4 where at about the same level while #2 was pulling about 1 1/2" of vacuum more and #3 was pulling about 3" more.  I leveled them off to the best of my ability with only slight differences in the level.
3) The plugs looked perfect (champion 88##, I forget but they are the correct ones) and I changed them for new ones.
4) I cleaned, re-oiled and installed the pods.
5) Changed the oil and filter.
6) There was some exhaust popping initially, when I was warming it up for the synch, but after the synch and on the test run it seemed better than before.

Finally, the question:

The bike would pull well until I hit about 5-6K rpm at 3/4 throttle, then it would stutter.  The stuttering was similar to what happens in a heavy rain.  Even with Outerwears, when there is standing water that gets splashed sideways by cars in to the rigth and left of me, I seem to have some acceleration problems at higher RPM. When I oiled the filters, it seems I put too much, because it was dripping on the floor from the bottom of the pods.  This isn't the first time I've cleaned and oiled them but it is the first time they have dripped that much excess oil.  The 3/4 throttle response was fine before the tune up (go figure) but it was running real rough (as the carb synch showed) so I don't think the problem should need shimming of needles.  Does anyone have a suggestion?  Could it be that the carbs are pulling in the excess oil from the filters at high rpm / throttle?  I am going to run it on Wed but trust in you guys to give me a few ideas,  I'm still a newbie mechanic.

P.S.  Thanks to the admin of this sight for the service manual and Bill for his Blade pages!

Did you over-oil the filter?
It should be sprayed just enough to lightly dampen the pleats.

Oh, the pleats are damp...so is the garage floor!  Actually, it's not forming a huge puddle or anything but it is dripping more than it ever has.

My K&N red oil for the filter came in a squeeze bottle and not a spray, unfortunatly, which means less control for those of us that are ham fisted  I'm hoping by Wed. it will have had a chance to run off the excess.  Do you think that's it?

If it's dripping, absolutely!

Got an air hose? If so, you can blow out the excess. Apply air from the carb side of the filter.
