Author Topic: HELP! My Wife has a HOT FOOT! (Exhaust Question) (Read 4177 times)

I have a 2005 B12. My wife complains her right foot gets hot when we are on longer rides. I considered her complaint and told her she can stay home (Just Kidding). I noticed that the Right passenger peg is no more than 2" from the muffler body, hence the hot foot syndrome.

Have any of you had this experience? Ideas?

I considered an aftermarket slip-on thinking the diameter of the muffler will be less and therefore would reflect less heat. I also considered the type of aftermarket muffler might make a difference. e.g. a carbon fiber bodied muffler might not get as hot as a stainless one (DO you think this assumption is correct?) Anyone have experience with a carbon fiber muffler?

I don't think there's gonna be much improvement with a change of can, at least my wife hasn't noticed. While the can is smaller, it is also has no double walls, so may even be hotter. My wife also complains of the right peg being buzzier because of the can being mounted to it.

I don't know if the CF cans would be any cooler, but they don't last as long as metal ones. I've seen some CF cans fray fibers after a few years. They can also start to loose color from UV exposure after a while.
(FWIW - there are a lot of CF parts on modern jets, and all those parts that are exposed to daylight get painted.)

IMHO, the best solution would be a heat shield of some kind. I've never seen one offered up, so it is something that would have to be fabbed. I've mulled it over a little, but never tried to whip anything up since my wife doesn't go for rides very often, and when she does, it's for short jaunts, so I've just made her deal with it.

Holeshot has a clamp that lowers the can a little for use with side bags, maybe something like that would help.
Or get her some good boots.

I thought of the heat shield idea, I guess I could try designing one and share it with the group if it works out.

The Boot idea is good as well. She wears boots now, however, we thought a diferent material my work better.

You could always do what I did when my wife complained about the rear seat.........bought her her own bloody bike.....

Now we have marital bliss...except that she soon tired of the 250 and decided that a Ducati Monster 750 was much better....jeez they cost a lot to service....

But there's no more complaining about the pillion seat.....just how much go fast bits are for Duke's.

Thats great your wife rides!

I wish My wife would ride. I have offered to put her throygh a MSF course and but her a small bike 250-400cc. She says she enjoys riding on the back and thats it.

We have been riding this way for 23+ years

She used to ride the little Honda Spree scooter we have (too small to require a m/c endorsement, classified as a moped, even though it has no pedals).

The carbon Yoshimura seems to run cooler. Within a minute or two of shut down you can put your hand on the can and not get burned. This is just a seat of the pants type observation. I have one in new condition if you were intrested. Yoshimura TRS carbon S/O. Let me know.
