So I've been having problems with my 2002 bandit 600....It would not start because it was flooding the engine. I replaced the plugs, battery, and went down one just size. (The battery would not stayed charged thats why I replaced it). so now it starts but the dang thing keeps back firing on me. After I pulled the tank and made sure there was nothing in the floats or the tank I put everything back together and I'm still having the some probelm. HELP please. But I'm thinkin that maybe a coil is going or maybe even gone out. Because it will only stay running about 15 secs per time before it dies. Thank ya'll

Has the bike been sitting for a while?
"Backfire" out the exhaust or the intake?

The bike has been sitting up...I pulled the plugs and charged the battery, it started and ran no problems. Then I let the bike sit again for a week because of bad weather, went out and flooded it when I tried to start it, finally got is started again after I replaced the battery and plugs but now its poppin out the exhaust....
The bike has an ignition advancer, D&D slip on, K&N, its been rejeted, and thats it I think. I've had the bike set up like this for over a year with no problems so like I said I'm lost.

I'm not sure I understand...
1. was the bike sitting for an extended period or not, before the problem started?
2. How old is the fuel?
3. You say you went down one size on the jets? Which jet (Main, needle clip, pilot}?
Anyway...start with the easy stuff first.
a) Fresh gas, drain the carb float bowls, make sure you have adequate fuel flow from the petcock.
b) Check and clean all your electrical connections, re-seat the high tension wire into the coils and plug caps, check the plug caps for damage, tight connections.
c) Check or preferably clean the air filter, look for oil/water in the airbox
d) Check all the cut out switches, side stand switch, clutch switch, kill switch on right handle bar.
An engine that starts, runs and then dies, sounds like fuel supply. Combustion in the exhaust however, is usually an intermittant ignition problem.
If you can provide some additional detail, I may have some other suggestions. Good luck

My 1200 used to do the same thing after setting for a week it was hard to start unless you cranked the throttle WFO and once it started it would pop and sputter for a few minutes then clear out! I thought the same thing ignition, plugs, floats, jets. One day when I was pulling the smog off I noticed fuel poured out of the two left cylinders (the low side when on the kick stand) when I was removing the air tubes. I did the Holeshot stage 2 jet kit and checked the floats and they were OK but the bike continued to do it. I purchased a used petcock on flea bay and the problem went away apparently the vacuum diaphragm in my old one went south! :duh:

so I got my new petcock in and put it in and its still doing the same thing that I was having problems with....Is there anyway to test coils??? Or do I just have to buy new ones and hope it works???

Here are the requirements for the 1200, go to the Downloads tab and check for the requirements for the 600! After installing the new/used petcock on my bike she was loading up on the first try because I allowed it to set before the installation but after restart the problem went away and I have had no problems since!
