Title: Is this front sprocket shot?
Post by: jwalters on July 19, 2005, 11:08:50 PM
I notice a knocking noise from my front sprocket/chain when I have my bike on the center stand and spinning the rear wheel with my hand.  I also have a lot of chain noise while riding.  I've cleaned my chain, kept it lubed, and the chain isn't too loose or tight, but just right.  Oh ya, and the tire is centered and not cock-eyed.

Still lots of noise... I think my front sprocket is about shot judging by the pits that are forming on the drive side (left) of each sprocket tooth.  The knocking noise I am hearing, I think, is the chain catching and releasing from these grooves.  Curious to see if you bandito owners agree judging by the pictures below.  If most of you agree, I think I'll order a front/rear sprocket and chain from bike bandit!  Gotta love the 4 megapixel cameras!

:thanks:

Time for a new one from the looks of those pics. Once the teeth don't look uniform on the drive and coast side, it's time. Those teeth look like they've developed a bit of a 'curve' to them.

My buddy (land_shark) and I are going to head up north to Duluth, Minnisota over the labor day break and riding the superior coast to canada.  So I want to get a few of these nagging issues fixed a few weeks before we leave.  That way I have a chance to get some miles under my belt and make sure everything works!  Where are you headed?

Ironically enough... Canada. Just a bit further west. Going to ride across Northern WA, ID and into MT and hit the "Going to the Sun Highway" in Glacier NP, then cross into Alberta and head up to Banff, then head west thru southern British Columbia back into WA... in four days.

Jeepers!     We're going to have to think more aggressively about our plans, jesse!

Definately!  Good practice to change both sprockets and chain.  Many do not do this and end up changing the sprokets again later.

Good advice GSF1200S....
It only makes sense to change BOTH sprockets and chain as a set.  Otherwise your dealing with an issue of uneven wear between the 3 individual componants.
