I notice that the K & N air filter element for the b12 is expensive, but can be washed and used over and over again. Anybody got an opionion on these air filter elements?
How do you wash them and add oil to them?

K&N filter cleaning kit from any autoparts store: ~ $9

Once a year would be how many miles on average. I ride a 1000 miles a month right now. I don't want to have to be pulling that thing out of there every week to clean it, but it does not sound like I would.

Have in mind that K&N is less restrictive than OEM filter. That somewhat affects the fuel/air mixture (less so with the K&N OEM replacement filter than the pods) and it also lets larger particles into your engine.
That said, I had K&N OEM replacement filter in my Kawi 550 for more than 10,000Km with no ill efects and no re-jetting needed. I think K&N recommends about 10K between cleaning, depending on the environment.

i've got a gen 2 1200 and i purchased a k,n filter using the prt no off a bandit site a couple of year ago,which i didn't realise at the time was for a gen 1,1200,so i put it in a mate of mines gen1 for free,remembering thatit cost me 130 nz dollars,and from the day i put it in the bike ran like a piece of junk with massive flat spots etc etc....so i eventually got pestered into asting more time taking it out and putting the original back in.....so i spent another 130 dollars to buy a gen 2 k,n...did a few bits and pieces to jetting etc only to read to my dismay on the site that a gen 2 goes best with the standard filter,so i took the kn out and putg back the original and it runs fine.so my new theory is...if it ain't broke ..don't fix it...slo coach

The K&N replacement filter for the 1G works great if used in conjunction with a jet kit. The 2G piece is hard to tune, even with a jet kit, though some people with Ivan' kit have had success.
I use the K&N pod filters with Holeshot's Stage II kit with great results. :bigok:

Do u have the rainshield or something like that on your pods paul?
I've always wanted to try the pods for my b6, but since we get a lot of rain here in wa, I just kept my stock set up.
I haven't even re jetted my bike. Hehe I'm lazy haha, must be the weather.you know me, I like to work under the sun. Haha

The pods hide behind the sidecovers perfectly on a 2G. You can't even tell the bike has pods unless you stick your nose in there REAL close.
From what Dale Walker says, the pods aren't effected by rain, even on the more open 1G bikes. You just want to avoid spraying water on them when washing with a hose.
OTOH, pods & a Stage II jet kit won't give anymore power on the B6 than the Stage I does, so going to pods is just a looks thing for the 1G B6. In fact, Dale doesn't even make a Stage II jet kit for the 2G B6.

Both bikes in the shed are fitted with K&N filters.
Funny thing both bikes came that way.
And even if they didn't I would on the very next service replace the none reusable unit. BMC is another one that I've heard good reports about.

I have an 02 1200S
Has a holeshot exhaust,timming advance,and stage 1 mod done!Has the hole cut into the top of the air box.
I currently have my bike apart,wanted to check the AirFilter,she has about 11500 on her!
The factory filter is Dirty,needs to be replaced!
None of the Stealers around here have 1 in stock.
The Stock filter is $29,will take 4-5 days to get!!
The stock K & N replacement is available locally for $55
I was going to go buy the K & N today,but this forum has me Rethinking that decission!!!
Is it true I will have to ReJet to a stage 2,just to install the fact replacement K & N,or will the stage 1 be OK??????

Do you like fooling with carbs? The element change will make it lean and the mains and perhaps the needles will need to be adjusted. It took me about 2K miles to get mine right on my gen 1 '99. I have the 2" hole mod with home jetting and scored Dale's needles. For me, the needles made the difference. I don't think it would run right with the thick stockers. I settled on 135 mains and 35 pilots.
The gen 2 is supposed to be easier - hope so.

As I just bought this bike about 6 weeks ago!!
It came with the current mods,still learning how to work on this thing!!!
What if I were to Cover the hole that was drilled into the factory airbox???

Don't cover the hole! It's there for the jet kit. As for the filter, use a stock replacement unless you want to fiddle with jetting. If you don't wanna pay the stock price, there are aftermarket vendors that make paper filters. IIRC, that was just covered recently.

Texas is a big state but there are lots of Bandit owners there. Put out a call and get to know a few. Some hands-on tech support is always encouraging considering you're new to the Bandit and its mods potential.

One quick point on the K&N pods...I have had problems in REALLY heavy downpours where there is standing water on the street that cars spray sideways at you when they pass you or you pass them. I thought it may have been a loose spark plug cap on the #2 cylinder that contributed to the problem (loss of acceleration and even a stall) but I just rode in such a downpour on Sat. and now that I have Outerwears (rain/dust jackets) the problem was significantly reduced. They are also supposed to keep the filter elements cleaner for longer. I have a 1G so no retention of side covers.

I saw earlier in the posts that a kit is used to clean K&Ns ... Are there any others products on the market that will do the job ? what is the product used in the kit apart from the oil ? gaz.

The kit has their approved cleaner and the oil.

On his website Dale Walker advices against a K+N filter with 2G 1200 with the jet kit. I have his stage 1 kit (hole in box, timing advance) with stock can. He says on 2G bandits the stock filter is actually the best. It must be true, because otherwise he would make more money by selling you the filter as well, but being honest he is not doing that. I finally sorted out my 2003, but I agree that it is not easy to tune. Dale was a great help.

Folks with 2G B12's have had success with the K&N replacement panel filter with Ivan's jet kit and with Dale's Stage II Airbox kit.
