stupid stupid stupid....

I purchaced a new DID x-ring chain and sprockets a few months ago (6), and hadn't gotten around to installing them until last night. For the record, I got 22,500 miles on the stock chain

Everything went great, until I riveted the thing together and pushed the rear wheel back. Always remember to count the links folks....

A) Too long is better than too short!

I just did mine and end up being two short. I went up one tooth in the rear and switch to 520 on 2G B6. I think I need two links so I need a 112

First, I used a dremmel to break the old chain. I bought a motion-pro type breaker/riveter from ebay for about $49 (I think it's probably a knock-off, but works just fine). Got the chain from cycle gear (note the 114...should have been 110, ack!):

and the sprockets from dennis kirk for $50.

I spent a lot of time cleaning and waxing the stock chain. I probably used it too long in retrospect. It was doing quite a number on the front sprocket, which was hooked pretty heavily! ...tough to see unless you hold it up to a new sprocket!

Oh, and the new rivet link is coming from bike bandit for about $12

Hey your on the ball with reply! good Morning. Iowa that's to far to go from Daytona to borrow your breaker/crimper! I respect you for getting the rite tool! Shouldn't we post where we get our chains etc? They aren't cheap, and like tires! being in the know can save big $$$ and save a Bandit bud from buying an inferior product. I bet Red01 can hit the spot on this? He seems to be on it with everything else!!!

I got my last chain in 120 links. Just marked where I wanted to grind it off with a small tie wrap,put it in the vise,ground off the pins and punch them through.

I ground off a pin with a dremel, and pushed it out. Then I counted, counted, and re-counted the links before grinding off 3 pairs of links (outer-inner) to get back down to 110. Everything's good now.

The riveting tool was a little difficult to use at first, but it really was a great help. At some point, I need to get a micrometer and make sure I pressed the rivets out enough...

On a side note, I got a scary reminder that I should have pumped my brakes before heading out to test the chain.
