Author Topic: NGK Iridium spark plugs (Read 10725 times)

I'm about to change my spark plugs and was looking at putting the iridium one's in part no' DR9EIX . I looked into them and there supposed to be the dogs goolies e.g. cleaner spark, better fuel economy etc but the price is heavy compared to the copper JR9B's. So was wandering if would be worth it or not.
Does anyone have any experience with these plugs or even your views on them please let me know. Here's the NGK site http://www.ngk.co.uk/

I put them in my 2003 Bndit 1200 at about 7500 miles. Have only about 12K now so can't comment on their longevity. They should last longer than the stock plugs due to the Iridium center electrode and the smaller diameter should allow a stronger spark as they deteriorate with age.

I plan to leave them in, with occasional inspections, for at least 20K miles. We'll see what they look likd then.

My local dealer gave me a good deal on them -- $7.50 each, so I figured I'd try them. The originals were just fine and looked good too, but I was following the recommended change interval in the owner's manual.

I've been having great luck with Autolite 4162's. They're a standard plug, but they're dirt cheap here in the US - and come highly recommended by Bandit tuning guru Dale Walker. I can get a set of 4 for <$10 from my local auto parts store. I change 'em at 15K intervals and they still look pretty good when I change 'em.

i have run one season with the irridiums and plan to go another.

don't really notice any difference in performance but they should last forever and why not feed your badit the best.

I'm still in 2 minds on which to put, it all comes down to the green stuff in the end.
Here in the UK the cheapest standard copper 1's are £14.90 for 4 which is about $27.15 and the Iridium's are £28 for 4 which is about $51.03

at the current exchange rate.

Well, CRAP, Robbie,

I bet some enterprising lads over here who have PayPal accounts would be glad to rape a rack in the local Advance Auto for a few 4162s. I change mine every year just cause they're so cheap. I could give you my throwaways.

Seriously, the cost of mailing 8 or so plugs to the UK should cost a lot less! I pay under $5 USD for a set of 4.

I was in the states last june, i knew i should have picked up some spares

I got a jet kit from ivan while i was in N.Y. didn't even think about plugs.
I have some friends in California and New York so i may give them a call to post me some out.
Oh just to clarify the price i quoted above are for N.G.K. plugs.

I've never had any plug related problems from stock jr9b's... so no changing brands. As far as I'm concerned, any gain one would get from a hotter/whatever plug is minimal and not worth the change.

I can see doing it for cost effectiveness (I'm a cheap bastard too!)... but a the stockers can be ordered through the local Advanced Auto for $3 ea and had the next day. $12 for all for is still only $1 more than what I pay for two plugs on my TL, so I'm happy.

I'll have about 9500 miles or more on my stock plugs before my trip at the end of May, should think about getting new plugs? I was going to check the gap and electrode condition put them back in. I've never had any problems with them at all! what do you guys think?

I usually change mine when I do the valves (7500 miles) but most of the time they still look just fine. I think you will be OK.

I replaced mine at 15K & 30K miles. Both times the plugs were good enough to keep in the tool box as spares.

Depends on how you run your bike, I dog mine and play alot, burnouts, wheelies and just revving for the hell of it, the 4162's last me about 3 months compared to the NGK's last closer to 8 months before they start fouling , make your own choice....
