Hi all,
Do these Oil Crankcase Breathers do anything?

Or are they just a gimmick.

Primarily....NOPE
When you go to a stage 2 jet kit the air box isn't used anymore and there is a vent hose that goes from the crankcase breather to the box. So, this hose and filter is for that hose that is now left with nowhere to be routed. It's essentially a catcher for the blow through/back. When mounted like in the pic on the side you'll see a smoke when you stop everynow and then at a red light, but it's nothing major.

This oil breather's hose threads into where the oil filler cap would normally be, right? I guess I was thinking if it plugs into the oil filler hole that it would be another place that the engine could draw some cool air in (keep the engine cooler). But if I'm understanding what your saying then it really doesn't do anything. I've got a Stage 1, BTW.

hi guys im new to the site, im running a stage 2 kit with crank breather here in the uk and all it does is keep the engine cooler! nothing else....as far as im aware the air box is not needed when u run a stage 3 jet kit as u have to run pod filters??!!

YES

I would like to know what kind (or the source) of fittings he uses!
That is how most of us route the Turbo oil return line!
That hardware looks much better than drilling and tapping an old oil filler
plug.

Depends on who's Stage II kit you're running. Holeshot's Stage II kit comes with K&N pods - and a crankcase breather. Holeshot is the most common Bandit kit referred to on this site that comes in a Stage II - most come in a 1 & 3 - with no 2.

Soooo... do you have to unscrew that whenever you need to add oil?
I guess it wouldn't be a problem with us first generation guys since we don't burn oil like some of you second gens... :stickpoke: :monkeymoon:

My breather doesn't screw into the filler cap though... I just have a filter like that on the end of the hose on the breather boc on top of the cam cover.
That one in the pic would have to be unscrewed to service oil though.

Sorry Paul, I knew what you had ( I have the StgII as well) I meant for that ebay kit. I guess they plug the top vent?

I'm guessing the idea if to provide extra breathing to help with crankcase pumping losses... big time drag racers even use pumps to suck air out.

you will have to un-screw it to top-up oil im thinking of chucking a turbo on mine soon just looking at costs thats why i have it......you dont need a breather if ur running stage two kits it's just the air filter that needs changing.

He's probably just made his own adaptor and the hose is a standard stainless braided flexible tap (fawcet) pipe.
I've done exactly the same, made an adaptor on the lathe from brass, bought a cheap 1ft stainless braided line (checked it with a magnet in the shop first to make sure :lol: ) and bought a breather filter from a car parts store. Only thing is the unknown quality of the rubber/neoprene in the line, it's made to withstand boiling water but not sure about oil/vapour. I'll keep checking it every so often to make sure it's not breaking up and probably cut it up to make doubly sure in a few months to see the full state of it, it's not as though they're expensive, dirt cheap in fact.
