Title: Petcock Operation
Post by: 1948man on July 09, 2011, 06:34:42 PM
Hi, new guy here with a 2000 1200 but no Owner's Manual.  I got a service manual CD off Ebay but can't find exactly what I'm looking for.  My question is, "Is there an OFF position on the petcock that should be used after each ride?"  My old GS 1100 has 3 positions,  ON,  RES, and PRIME.  I understand all those and just leave the petcock on ON all the time.  Is the Bandit petcock the same?  There is no OFF labeled on my Bandit petcock but I kind of wondered about the 9 o'clock position.  I'm probably over thinking this but just want to make sure I don't end up with gas in my oil.  I do have an Owner's manual on order.  Thanks,  Jim M

 :welcome:
My 2000 has the factory petcock and has no off position. If yours is still a factory unit then there is no off position.
There are a bunch of nice people here, they have been a big help to me.
Lots of good reading on the Bandit here too.

Mike

Thanks Mike.  I've got the factory petcock so I'll just leave it on the ON position (unless I need Prime or RES).

You got it. There is a vacuum operated diaphram which releases the flow of fuel. It's not like those old style carbs with gravity feed.

The vacuum controls the on/off.  It's still gravity feed when on.

You might look into a Pingel petcock valve - lots of folk run those.
