I realize that this must have come up recently - and I apologize - but I'm not sure what to do about this problem.

i have the Holeshot stage two jet kit and a slip-on on my 2005 bandit b12s.
I know nothing about mechanics - it was done for me, but I get a very annoying popping on decel (which sometimes goes away).

Does anybody know why or what I can do about it - or what I should ask/tell my mechanic if I can't do it?

Mine does that, but it sounds kinda cool to me, rather than annoying.  If your noise is the same as mine, I think it's supposed to do that, actually.  I could be wrong.

Got a sound file on it?

I've heard that if you turn your air fuel screws a little further out some of it will go away. Try an extra 1/4 turn and work from there. Make sure you have a warm bike to do this. THe bike will run a little richer for about the first 15 minutes and you want it to be at running temp.  :roll:

Someone mentioned that it had something to do with a PAIR valve - whatever that is...

Your idle mixture screws are hidden under metal plugs. The carbs have to be removed to get to them using a small drill bit and perhaps a screw to grab and remove them. If the mod was doen for you, they should have revealed the screws. They are underneath each carb, near the boot closest to the engine. Short flat blade screwdriver.
opening the screws will help the popping. Increasing your pilot jet wil help even more. I think the Gen II gang uses a 17.5 pilot for best results. Mine has popped like an explosive with 32.5 pilots (genI) and is best with a 35 out 3 turns.
Now, if I still lived in NJ, I'd help you personally. Ain't going back there anytime soon.

This is the air/fuel screw with the brass plug the factory put over it removed.

Also if the PAIR system is still intact and in there you can turn the mixture screws till the plugs turn black and it will still pop slightly. In fact once you get past the sweet spot it will pop a little more with the PAIR system in there. As long as the pipe isn't exploding with popping a little pop is perfectly normal. I've experimented like this with my mixture screws at crazy levels to eliminate the popping and I can get it to basically not pop but if I sit at idle for more than a couple of minutes and blip the throttle a shitload of black smoke comes out and it's super mushy at low rpms. Not fun. Don't worry a little pop is ok. Plus it's still spring in the heat of summer you may actually find your slightly rich and the pop will go away. The most important part is that the bike runs well. Does it run ok? Make sure you drive it for at least a half an hour before fiddleing with the mixture screws to make %100 sure its up to full operating temp. A quick ride around the block a few times is not enough to heat the engine.

For example you're in my end of the continent and the temps are only getting up to around 15 degrees celcius(60 F) as the highs. Hardly full summer heat. Wait untill the temps are around 70F + I'll wager that pop goes away and you may even have to lean the bike out slightly.
2005 Bandit 1200, Modified Holeshot Stage 1 with 17.5 pilots 2.75 turns out, and 110 mains 5 shims. Muzzy Slip on w/mid-pipe, stock filter. 1.5" hole in the airbox lid.
