Air filters

Hi everyone

I have started to modify my bandit 1200 K6. I see on some bandits the airbox is removed and the airfilters are exposed. What is the idea and how would this work on a bike that is riden everyday, all weathers over here in the UK. Would heavy rain affect the bike.

Good question as I am also trying to find out if there is a stock carburetor configuration for the 2nd gen B12 that will allow it to use those cool little pod air filters.  I have the Ivan set up with Yosh RS3 slip-on running 125 main jets. Besides adjustments and re-synchronization I bet I will  have to change to bigger main jets but what? 130's?

Holeshot and Factory Pro sell jet kits for the B12 that use pod filters. Holeshot uses K&N and Factory Pro uses BMC.

On the 1G B12, the pods will be out in the open, but on the 2G they will hide stealthily behind the side covers. The 3G (K6 - not available in the USA) should use the same jet kit as the 2G, but if I recall the looks of their setup right, their pods will show.

On the 1G, heavy rain can be a problem, but lighter rain is OK. On the 2G, since they're behind the side covers, rain is not a problem.

I could have sworn there was a post here with pictures of an 05 B12s with pyramid pods by B1200s I believe. Shows them exposed looking hot, but your correct the covers were removed and it looked great except for the exposed cover bracket. I better send Ivan an email and ask him the jet size change as all I want is the filter and can pick up the jets locally for a "kit". Thanks Red 01

Chances are Ivan will tell you there's nothing to gain going to pods... he's normally a very pro-airbox guy. Back when he first came out with B12 jet kits, he was a member at another popular Bandit board and he poo-poo'd the pod kits of another jet kit maker who also was (and still is) a member. Ended up getting him banned and earning him the nickname over there as "I-ban".

FWIW - Ivan is a member here, but I haven't seen him post in years. I don't know if he ever reads this board anymore.

I agree that I will probably not realize a gain, its more vanity I'm after. I probably shouldn't ask Ivan though since he is so adamant about it. Maybe the 125's I have in there now will be enough and if the performance and burn is lean, I can try pulling the tops and moving the jet needed up a notch and the pilots a half turn.

I have a b12 with an ivans and one with the pod setup ala holeshot.  The holeshot bike's mains are 152.5 , and it has made a noticable difference in the bike from the ivan.  It seems to be more responsive.  Could be the difference in the two bikes, but I am now very pro pods.  My ivan setup pulled 116 hp and haven't dynoed the new one yet, but it feels stronger on the butt dyno.

Let me know if you ever work out a pod set up with the Ivan bike as it will probubly requires larger then 125 main jets. But since the Ivan needles are different, who can tell what larger size to go to, 152's might be to much for Ivan needles which I hear are ground much slimmer the Holeshot.

I would agree that Ivan's needles are smaller at the pointed end.  They fatten up to be about the same towards the middle.  Seems to suggest a difference at high throttle/load inputs.  The vacuum slide springs were modified for the holeshot and I don't remember that in the Ivan's but it has been a while.  My Ivan's kit showed rich on the dyno running an A/F ratio in the mid 12's.  Interesting considering the smaller main jet size and my understanding that at WOT you are almost entirely on the mains and off the needles.  That is one of the reasons I went to the pod setup as I reasoned there was a restiction to the airflow and it required a matching smaller jet size to compensate.  Am I on the right track here with my thinking?  Not knocking the Ivan kit (116HP for me) just an ageing drag racer that can't stop tinkering

note; this is on my 00 b12 .but I have Ivans kit with airbox mod and am running a k&n filter . my mains are 117.5 .needles in the center clip position ( or centre for our friends to the north ) and screws are set between 2 and 3 turns out depending on the time of year it is
