Title: What oil temp should a B12 run at normally?
Post by: Octane on April 09, 2012, 04:34:42 AM
Does anyone know the answer to this question?
What is the normal running oil temp and what would be the point where you scream for ice packs for your oil cooler?
I'm investigating possibility of installing an oil temp gauge to keep an eye on things.
Cheers.

The red zone on my oil filler cap temp gauge starts at 120 degrees celcius...  I've never come close to it.

Some more info on some guys experience and sources for temp gauges here:

The oil WILL get exposed to temps as high as 500 deg F on the underside of the pistons, which is why there are oil jets spraying there, but average oil temp will likely be closer to 100 F, but some guys have reported temps in the 140 deg F range after sustained idling in high ambient temps.

Sustained temps above 150 F are harder on the oil and shorten the oil's life, but in our bikes, oil usually gets changed pretty often.

Use the search function for "Oil Temp" and you will find a bunch of threads.

Are you sure about the "Fahrenheit" readings??....  Water boils at 212 F so how could "average oil temp".. "be closer to 100 F??

Or are we just effed up a bit??...      :stickpoke:

I agree maybe 100 Celcius is more like it. My GS750EF's oil temp guage when hot, stuck in traffic would hover around the 90 Celcius mark and sometimes would go to 102 celcius if it was a super hot day in a traffic jam, but that's only a 750. Trust me I've burnt myself with hot engine oil doing a change a few times, and I can tell you it's alot hotter then a pleasant 100F which is slightly cooler than a hot shower. Most times it would be like 80-85 Degrees Celcius which is enough to scald and burn you.(don't ask how I know) It was kind of a crap guage though the guage only started at 70 then went to 120 then a red area so I'm not sure how accurate it was but it gave you an idea if you were burning up though, I guess it did the job because I never came close to the red zone.

I think we may have a case of drink and post....I do it all the time.

Oops...forget all of this...It's wrong. I guess that's what happens when I think in deg C, but do some stuff in deg F. Yes...the above would be deg C.   :duh:
