Author Topic: Katana and Bandit engine's the same?? (Read 10188 times)

Was just buying an oil filter and I grabbed the third last one - fellow beside me got the last two. He has a Katana and loves it...are they the same engine? (650)

I rode a Katana and thought it was okay but I just wasn't really smitten - not sure why - the bars are lower but the bike was in bright yellow so it looked pretty good.

I think it was quite a few more dollars than the bandit.

Pretty much the same engine as the Bandit 600. You've got 50cc's on him.

And less weight and more comfortable ergos (IMHO, anyway).

The 750 Kat motor bolts right into the 600/650/1200 Bandits, as does the older air/oil cooled GSXR 750 & 1100 motors.

All of the "OIL" cooled.
The Pic to the left is a 89 Katana 600 with a 90 GSXR 1127

On the oil filter, that part number will fit a lot of Suzuki's. Same part number on Bandit, Katana, and Busa.

1985-1991 is the era of the original SACS air/oil cooled GSXR 750.

Go here and peruse the mods we made to Lloyd's 600, now for sale. I traded with him for a ride on the Cherahola skyway in TN/NC and followed and obviously slow guy on an R1. The bike was an absolute blast - of course that was with RS carbs and Dale's header. Freaky above 7K.

I wonder if my 84 GS750EF unit would bolt in there. It's an air/oil 16 valve jobby as well. The oil cooler other than being bigger on the bandit looks exactly the same as does the oil lines.

If not, it probably wouldn't be too difficult... I've seen quite a few old GS's with SACS oil cooled motors swapped in... and the SACS motor family was based off of the TSCC motor family before it.

Dammit!! Now I REALLY want to find a 750. Been thinking that will be my next step in motorcycling as I really like the Bandit. Anybody know what kind of power you can get from a 750 Kat engine without getting crazy with the internals? I'm thinking maybe pods, port and polish, pipe and jets, gixxer cams. What else?

Well my GS750EF is for sale but I'm in Canada and it's also in very good condition, YOu probably wouldn't want to wreck it. My friend and I tore down the engine at 76 thousand K as a winter project and replaced the valve springs and seals, reground the valves and checked the rings and cylinders and cleaned up the head and pistons. Even after 76K and God knows what kind of servicing all the rings were in excellent shape. The cylinders were all good too, except number 2 was slightly more worn but well within spec. Slapped her back together and she drives like a new bike. It just shows how bulletproof these bikes are. Mine has been re-jetted and had a Yosh pipe on it when I bought and its pretty peppy(85 horespower stock, 90? with Yosh and jet). Coming from the 80's it has pretty good ergos too. very much like the bandit but with drop bars. Here's a pic of the model I have:

In fact I think the KAT engine is a variation on the same engine as mine. I looked at a KAT750 engine and is was identical right down to the oil cooler and oil lines. This may be cosmetic only I'm sure they tweaked the cams for more mid-range or whatever. These engines are super reliable and very hard to kill. Look on e-bay or at a wreckers for a complete engine.

Sweet looking bike. I really like the 80's bike like yours and the Interceptors and FJ's. Will probably own one some day. Sounds like with a little work you could get close to 100 hp out of a Kat 750 and that would be plenty for me.

I believe the stock Katana has 92 HP so hitting 100 shouldn't be too hard.
