Title: Dramatic rise in fuel consumption
Post by: vwbabbler on October 08, 2010, 10:41:44 AM
Greetings. My first post here. This subject that has probably been covered, but I haven't found it in FAQ or here. I got a K8 1250 ABS in May. It had 5,800 miles then, about 7,800 now. A few weeks ago, the off-throttle response briefly got really ragged.  It was so bad I though the bike was going to stall. But it recovered as quickly as it appeared, and it hasn't done that since. Fueling might be slightly less smooth than before, but not a problem. The bike starts instantly and runs smoothly. Power, torque, all there. However, since that episode, which occurred about two weeks (and two tanks of gas) ago, fuel consumption has gone from normal (39-46, depending) to not good (31-35). Most of my riding has been daily commuting (10-12 miles round trip).
I've done nothing that would affect mileage. The mechanicals are stock. Tires are properly inflated, and my right wrist is generally under control.
I checked the air filter yesterday. It's very clean. I don't want to pull the plugs yet because the bike is running well, and I don't think the plugs could go bad that quickly. The chain is properly adjusted.
I've been riding daily, so the gas was fresh, but I could have gotten a bad batch. Today I'll siphon out the remaining fuel and replace it with fresh. Of the other possible causes I've seen suggested, the ECU and or O2 sensor seem most likely.
Thoughts? Suggestions?

TPS setting is off and needs resetting, might as well remove secondaries and do a balance as well. Follow instructions in workshop manual; available in downloads section above.

Thanks for the suggestion, Dink. I couldn't find a 1250 manual in the downloads section; just a "250," and it wouldn't download. I've got a Haynes manual. Anyway, I'm not sure I'd be up to doing that work myself, esp the secondaries. My plan is to ride it as is through the remainder of fall, then make the TPS a cold-weather project. If the TPS is off, I might get the dealer to do the throttle bodies.

Dealer will not remove secondaries; emissions etc. 1250 Manual @ this link http://forums.banditalley.net/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item39

Before I did anything mechanical I'd go to my local Autoparts store and buy a can of SEAFOAM and pour some in the gas and go for a long ride.

Why would your TPS be out of adjustment just becasue you had some rough running??

Bandit1250, I'd love to go for a long ride, or even a short ride, but the weather is south-central Kentucky has turned to crap. The temps have ranged from 7 or 8 to the mid-30s for about two weeks now, and we're just getting over an episode of freezing rain. We've still got a bit of snow on the ground from last weekend.
I've run some Techron through the tank, and I think it's having an effect, but I've done so little riding I can't be sure. But Seafoam is next.
