Looks like the cap wrench I have been using for 10 years on Suzuki's won't work on the Bandit 1250. It fits fine, one problem I can't get it on with a ratchet already on it due to the header being so close. Looked in the owners manual and it spec'd a Suzuki part #, I called and ordered the tool. It appears this one will have a 6 point nut on the end that I can put a closed end wrench on tool remove the filter. Cost me $5 bucks when they get it in. 1st oil change is coming up soon I am at 500 miles. It will be a 100 miles round trip to the dealer.

Same filter, but you will not get a ratchet on a normal cap wrench. I got the Suzuki part, and it has a 6 pt. not on top that you can turn with a regular wrench.

The size of the "nut" is 17mm, same size as your drain plug. An open-end or box-end wrench will work.

I found it easiest to come in from the right side with the wrench, then remove the filter through the left side, holding the radiator hose out of the way.

So how do you tighten the thing back up? Are you using the cap over the filter then clamping with that thing? If my Suzuki wrench does not make it by saturday I will go to Harbor frieght and get one of those to clamp over my wrench that won't work with a ratchet.

Well, for putting the new one on, I use a cap socket and my ratchet... but then I have a 1200, not a 1250.

I suppose you could replace the OEM filter with a K&N oil filter (KN-138), they come with 17mm nuts welded on the end of them.

The Suzuki filter-cap tool is basically the same as that K&N filter, except it has a 3/8" square hole in the middle of the 17mm nut for your ratchet or extension.

It fits in the tool kit easily. Ya never know, I like to be prepared... and it's only $6 bucks.

How much is one of those K&N filters?

IIRC, they run ~$10-12, add $1 if you want it in chrome.

I could not wait ot get the cap tool today I went redneck yesterday afternoon in the garage after two beers and got the sucker off using my existing cap tool and a pair of channel lock pliers, worked great! Oil is changed and I am headed out riding today to pic up my wrench I ordered. It is a bit tight getting the oil filter out by the hose Suzuki almost caged the thing in, that would have sucked to have to lower the header to change oil
