What an absolutely great day.
We left sunny downtown Wagga bound for Tumbarumba at around 9:15. Temperature was a pleasant 15c. It's around 120km (the way we went) and has some boring bits but overall it's reasonable. You can easily average 120km/hr without stressing the bike or yourself, however the odd piece of road kill in the middle corners makes life interesting.
We refuelled at Tumba and headed for Cabramurra via Elliots Way. Brilliant - a bit narrow and tight for the B12 and you had to stay really alert and watch for 4WD's on the wrong side of the road. The Treasurers M750 ate it for breakfast - shame she's a bit out of practice though. There were places were I was lucky to get to 60km/hr.
It's amazing how quickly the temperature can drop when you're in the high country, one minute I was almost sweating, the next (and only a couple of k's down the road) I was seriously considering pulling over and putting a jumper on under the leather jacket.
After a cuppa at Cabramurra we headed to Khancoban. Now this piece of Elliots Way is excellent. It's not quite as tight or narrow as the earlier bit and the surface is a hell of a lot better.
We filled ourselves up at the Khancoban General Store - I just love Mrs Mac's Pies then filled the bikes up and headed back to Tumba via Tooma. This is more my style of road - open fast sweepers - in the words of Rex Hunt "magnificiant".
Back at Tumba we stopped for coffee at the Cinema Cafe - they make a nice brew and serve a decent meal at a fairly reasonable price. And, if you've got time you can watch a movie as well.
The trip back to Wagga was via the same road as before. Luckly some kind person had cleaned up the road kill, so all I had to contend with was an old couple in an Avalon that couldn't make up their mind as to what speed they wanted to do - 130 on the flat and straights - 100 going round corners and up hills.... Now that may sound like it's easy for the B12 to overtake them - however - Mr Plod (police) have a nasty habit of parking in the bush and taking a photograph of you speeding - so given I've only just got all my points back I wasn't taking too many chances.
We got back to Wagga @ around 4:00. So, less around 1.5hrs of off bike time, that's a 5.5 hour ride - a check of the Trip Meter shows 430km - not bad considering around 100km of that was at well below 80.
The Treasurer and myself have now decided that this would make a wonderful first half of an overnighter to Cooma.
Sorry no pics - my digital camera is not working.
