BAD WEEK FOR AUSSIE ICONS
« on: September 08, 2006, 02:42:43 AM »
Peter Brock has been killed in a Rally Accident in Perth.

Details are sketchy at this stage, but it appears the car he was driving (racing) lost control and hit a tree during the Rally Australia WA Round.

RIP Peter Brock - whether you're a Holden or Ford fan it's a sad day for Australian Motor Sport.

How scary to have two Aussie legends/icons killed doing the thing they loved in the same week.

From the Sydney Morning Herald web site

Australian motor racing legend Peter Brock has been killed in an accident while taking part in the Targa West rally in Western Australia, motor sport officials have confirmed.

The Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) said in a statement the accident occurred at about 1.50pm (AEST).

Sixty-one-year-old Brock's co-driver, believed to Mick Hone, has been taken to hospital in a stable condition. CAMS said it will conduct a full investigation into the incident.

In the meantime, CAMS and event officials are working with the relevant civil authorities.

"On behalf of the motor sport community, CAMS offers its sincere sympathy to Peter's family and many friends," the statement said.

Targa West is a tarmac special stage rally.

Brock was a dominant figure in Australian motor sport, winning the Bathurst 1000, Australia's most prominent domestic motorsport event, a total of nine times through the 1970s and 80s.

He won six Bathurst 1000 wins in seven years, including his victory in the 1979 event, which he won by a record six laps.

He retired from full-time driving in 1997.

Since 1997, he had made two return visits to Bathurst in 2002 and 2004 and returned to top-level touring car racing as a team owner of "Team Brock" in 2002 in the V8 Supercar category. A year later he sold his share in the team to Kees Weel.

In recent years, he occasionally competed in various motorsport events such as the Targa Tasmania.

The circumstances of the accident remain unclear.

The Targa West takes place over four days and is divided into two categories, competition and challenge, the latter catering for relatively standard specification road cars.

The rally began in Perth on Thursday.

Brock's car hit a tree and no other vehicles were involved, it is understood.

The accident occurred near the small community of Gidgegannup, about 40 kilometres east of Perth.

Known as 'Peter Perfect' and the 'King of the Mountain', Brock retired from full-time racing in 1997 but returned to Bathurst to win the 24-hour race in 2003.

The editor of Wheels magazine, Jed Bulmer, says Peter Brock was the consummate driving professional who won many accolades, but will best be remembered for his mastery of the race circuit at Bathurst.

"You know the great Australian touring car race and a race which is regarded as one of the most difficult touring car races in the world and Peter was the nine-times winner there at what is known these days as the Bathurst 1000," he told ABC radio.

"He had a long and very successful career there, he was the 'King of the Mountain' as he came to be known."

TV footage shows Brock's badly damaged silver Daytona Coupe at the base of a tree beside a road in bushland, a blue tarpaulin covering the windscreen.

What a shame, terrible accident

I heard the car slid at the rear end, and half spun, then hit a tree right on the drivers side door.

The Co-driver was Aussie motorcycle tuning legend Mick Hone (has/had? a store in Melb.) worked with Robbie Phillis back in the old Suzi GSX1100 Superbike days.

RIP Brocky.
That's impressive,
and I'm not easily impressed.

Look, a blue car!

Wow what a week, Steve, Peter, and we very nearly lost a 3rd in the same car as Peter Perfect. Mick Hone aka Mick Hone motorcycles was the injuried co driver.
And as a co worker said over the 2 way who's the 3rd, things happen in 3's.
I Know Mick Hone, and I know he will be cut to the wick, he wears his heart on his sleeve.
Peter, love him or hate him, me I've always loved him, and have seen every single Bathurst win of his, he will always be the King of the Mountain. Even the most hardened Ford racing fan will sad of his passing.
RIP PETER PERFECT KING OF THE MOUNTAIN BROCK.

Some good news on Mick Hone - on tonights news it showed him up and about.  Well enough to fly back to Melbourne - although it was obvious that he was limping and still in pain - both mental and physical......
