Burglary suspect caught on mobility scooter
17 August 2005
A 38-year-old Whangarei man with an apparent penchant for senior citizen fashion and mobility scooters was due to appear in court today.
Acting Sergeant Grant Rouse, of Whangarei police, said police were driving in Otangarei about 2am today when they saw a man riding a red mobility scooter on the footpath.
As soon as he saw police, who were in the area looking for a person suspected of attempted burglary, he ran off. Police caught him and found 21 items of senior citizens' clothing on the scooter, including underwear, jerseys and handkerchiefs. The man was charged with theft.
Mr Rouse said police had no idea who the red CTM-brand scooter and clothing belonged to, or if the 38-year-old man was involved with the attempted burglary.
